Forums - Gaming - So, what's the deal with Go Nintendo and VGchartz?

BUMP!

Sorry for bumping this old thread, but it seems that Go Nintendo decided to be at peace with VG chartz and have decided to quote any sales as not final.

You can read the article here:

http://gonintendo.com/?p=67274#comment-2370846

One of the comments, however, say that the founder of this site was banned from GAF from pulling numbers out of nowhere. Can someone PLEASE explain me this?

The story goes something like this.

ioi is the owner of this site, and used to be an active member over at GAF. He thought that they could provide better tracking information than what was currently provided and decided to start tracking sales himself. He took freely available data and used it to create better data. He shared the information freely with GAF, but some people over at GAF didn't like this too much, and claimed he was pulling numbers out of his ass. They especially didn't like that he wouldn't disclose his sources of information. part of the reason not to disclose such information is to prevent NPD from threatening VGChartz and forcing those stores/sources from giving any information to VGChartz.

ioi then started VGChartz as his own site, and GAF banned him since they were jealous that they didn't have VGChartz as their own. Ever since then GAF has spread hate and lies about VGChartz and has even banned the name from their site. You get banned if you post numbers from VGChartz on their forums.

Anyways, most sites don't understand VGChartz, and don't realize that VGChartz is willing to adjust its data to correct for previous mistakes. Now NPD does the same thing (i'm positive they do) but they don't publish those corrections to the general public, only the paying customers.

Since no one ever sees corrections from NPD, they take NPD as gospel (which they shouldn't, as it is just an estimate). People do see corrections from VGChartz, but originally tried to take VGChartz as gospel (which they shouldn't, as it is just an estimate). (this part is conjecture about why goNintendo said they got burnt in the past) GoNintendo posted numbers from VGChartz, and everyone took it as cold hard facts. The problem, is that VGChartz shoots for 20% accuracy on weekly numbers, and 10% accuracy on monthly numbers (i may be off on the %s). Since the numbers changed, GoNintendo (I'm sure influced by GAF members) then said that VGChartz must be pulling numbers out of their ass.

oh, and don't worry, this site doesn't ban members for mentioning other sites that may/maynot like this website.

You'll only get banned/warned for breaking the forum rules or posting porn.

The feud between Go Nintendo and vgChartz goes back for quite a ways even before vgChartz become .com. Back in the days of vgChartz.org, Kevin and ioi were good friends, best of buddies, and some might even have called them... chums. All would not be peaceful forever though.

One day, ioi asked to borrow Kevin's copy of Pokemon Red and use it to beat the cups in a copy of Pokemon Stadium he'd just found in a bargain bin at Target. However, ioi did the unthinkable. He lost Kevin's copy of Pokemon Red. Kevin was crushed... no, he was devastated. His beloved team was gone and he had nothing in their place.

Kevin cried bittersweet tears all day and night before disowning ioi and their friendship altogether. Months and even years went by as neither spoke to the other except for the occasional angry stare by Kevin. Then one day, as Kevin was cleaning out an old box of games, he came across it. Pokemon Red. It turns out that ioi had given it back to him, but Kevin had lost it himself among his vast collection.

No one quite knows what happened after that but we know what they say. Some would even speculate that Kevin's tiny heart grew three sizes that day. So now vgChartz and GoNintendo are friends once again, but who knows for how long or until when.

As ever nordlead has it about right. Essentially GAF didn't understand and in general still don't seem to understand the point of VGC - to offer reasonably accurate original estimates as an alternative to other figures which often take longer to arrive and are often kept under wraps. Same is true with GoNintendo and others.

The mistake that they make is to assume that we are claiming our data is perfectly accurate - which we are not. It's good to see that GoNintendo now seem to understand where we are coming from and are happy to reference us in a similar way to analysts (which is exactly what we want from people) - we are at least as accurate and credible as the likes of Pachter and EEDAR in my eyes so credit to GoNintendo for posting this - let's hope others can see the light as well...

Huh... Glad i could be here to learn about some of vgchartz history.  Thanks guys, and keep up the good work

That makes more sense that nordlead's story.

Also, i just checked alexa.com and vgchartz has been ahead of gonintendo in Reach and Hits in recent weeks, and it is trending up to pass neogaf soon too (despite the fact it has not being around as long)...

Not that it's a competition .

How long have you had the vgchartz domain, ioi?

Funny story, lol.

Nintendo still doomed?
Feel free to add me on 3DS or Switch! (PM me if you do ^-^)

What the hell is GAF seriously? its pages and pages of text that look like crap since theirs no effort to design the site properly.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

BTW, When journalists claim their "sources" are more accurate than your estimates know that those same journalists trumpeted the Iraq war and its motivation as the gods honest truth.

Since nobody mentioned it; it isn't that incommon (although, VGC is getting more and more accepted all the time) to a lot of the sites to diss VGC (i actually ran into argument once with one site admin about VGC). Part of the reason is that people view the site as a provider of weekly figures and missing the whole picture.
As i see it, there two very valuable things that VGC provides: weekly figures with a close enough accuracy (it really doesn't matter whether Wii sold this this week 1,6 or 1,7 million units, when it opposes 500k units of PS3) and the historical data. You very rarely see VGC being bashed for its recorded sales history and graphs, since this is the only site you're able to find them.
