lol or considering the 360 outsold the PS3 by 280k last week in Americas it is very likely we will see it this week ;) You're very cautious these days Squilliam! |
Ok, it will do it this week most likely and the gap in the last 4 weeks of the year could easily add another million to the gap to the total (8.25 million lead), so quite possibly we could see the Xbox 360 take a 9 million console lead by the start of Q2 2009, before any possible Sony pricecuts are even possible.
Tease.

I think, when we discuss revenue vs. consoles, there are 2 important things to consider. 1) For the present time, consoles are what matter. The more consoles sold means far more than revenue...If your selling a ton of consoles, your going to eventually lead in every feasable catagory (such as the Wii - despite a pretty bad ratio of HW to SW, it's overcome that gap by dominating hardware). Furthermore, since it moves more SW, it certainly helps the hardware maker, because the licensing fees are where they make the big bucks. 2) Revenue ONLY matters if you have a chance to reduce prices. One of the things with the X360 was, even when it was $400 for the Premium, there were enough consoles being sold that most knew that when the price dropped....Sales would pick up. The problem is, now, that so many consoles are being sold in the X360/Wii camp, that they are drying up the purchase base so quickly (in a relative term), that the boost Sony will get from a price reduction will be mitigated...Because when it drops to $300, the X360/Wii may have dried up a significant portion of the users wanting to buy a console at $300.

While ps3 isn't out of the game by a longshot, I really believe 360 is going to put 2nd place out of reach for ps3, if the lead balloons to 9 million+ by the eventual price cut for the ps3 in 2009. Will that mean the death of the ps3, of course not, as the system is selling well, but it will mean that after dominating the last generation, ps will have fallen hard. It will also mean sony has less leverage to "force" nintendo and m$ into adopting brd for the next gen. If ps3 comes in last, those consoles will be able to dictate terms to sony to get them to allow it onto their machines.
