Mario Kart Wii will hit 20m... but... but... but... but does it really deserve that many sales? What exactly has the new Mario Kart brought to the table? No leap in graphics, physics, or even controls. I give it the golden cow award for most successful milking of a franchise.

This was pretty funny until I realized that in five games Nintendo has sold more than most franchises ever dream about reaching. Then it became terrifying.

The Wii franchise will by the end of the year be the 3rd most selling franchise ever.

Games with the name "Mario" in them this generation has already outsold the total sales of any other non-nintendo franchise.

 

Scary indeed.

Out of curiousity, I checked the all-time list. 34 of the top 50 selling games of all time are from Nintendo. 11 of those games were made in the past three years. That's right, they have nearly as many games in the top 50 from the past three years than every other publisher ever. Combined.

Yeah, I'm a little scared too...

It will definitely happen as it has been out over 6 months and hasn't really declined in salesexcept for seasonal variations.

Current gen Mario sales are around 85m I believe... The Sims has sold 100m, and with the older Sims games like SimCity, the franchise total is probably around 125m.

And then there's GTA, which I believe was at 75 or 80m before GTAIV launched. And FF is at least in the 75m+ range.

So there's a couple. Still, Mario is going to sell 100m games this gen with ease, which is still scary. By the end of this year, Mario and Sonic could become the 4th current-gen Mario game to reach 10m sold between Wii and DS.

Whoops, my bad. Wait untill the end of the year.

 

Mario on Wii: 34M

Mario on DS: 48.7M

Total: 72.7M

 

GTA: 75.6M

"Wii series": 64.32M

 

PS: No The Sims, we're in a thread about console sales, so none of the PC sales counts. I am using VGChartz data, so GTA might be a tad low.

Mario Galaxy sold 8 million, Mario Party sold 6 million, and there's all that other stuff below. It's minimum 15 million total.

The Sims is last-gen.

The correct count on current-gen Mario sales is 83.31m.

I think you missed Mario Sluggers and then forgot to carry a 1, Oyvoy.

More scarily? Wii Fit + Play might just outsell all the Zeldas combined (currently 49.3M). That means they will outsell all other Nintendo franchises save for Mario, Pokemon and the Wii franchise (of course, 2 games can't outsell a franchise that contains them + other games).

 

 

Oh, and Erik Aston is correct, Mario this gen is above GTA combined.
