Forums - Gaming - Editorial: Nintendo’s Wii Is The Gaming Industry’s Financial Scapegoat

naznatips said:
I agree with the majority here, the article is correct that lots of crap will come to the Wii, but why is this news? Finding good games amongst the crap on the PS2 was like finding a needle in a haystack. Truckloads of crap go hand in hand with the most games, which goes hand in hand with the best sales, which goes hand in hand with the most good games.

This needs to be emphasized. A lot of cheap ports is already an upgrade from little to no support at all. This is the chain of events that happens with every generational leader:

A) Sales start of well at launch
B) Sales continue past the first 6 months
C) Developers begin to focus more on the leader
D) The titles that are quickest to develop (and usually the worst) arrive first
E) The titles that are quick to develop continue to arrive, but are joined by mid-level titles of good quality
F) The titles of low and mid level quality continue to arrive, but are joined by the occasional high quality game

This is how it works, every time, especially when the lead platform manufacturer switches, as it has now. We were at A, and many people said B wouldn't come (Wii is just a fad!). It did. Then they said C wouldn't come. It did. Then people said D wouldn't come, and it did. Now, at this point, people are saying E won't come. People doubt this logical chain of events every step of the way, as if it's highly unlikely that A will follow B will follow C will follow D will follow E.

Stop, please. No reasonable person is saying the Wii is going to go from paltry third party support to having all the AAA titles exclusive to its platform in 6 months. Heck, I strongly doubt the Wii will ever have more than, say, half the AAA franchises located on the Wii. Instead, this is gradual. As the Wii userbase continues to rocket past the userbase of the 360 and PS3, the developmental support will gradually move more and more to the Wii.

Ya know. I like how it's been explained the the PS2 did so well because it had huge 3rd party support. And tons of those 3rd party games were crappy. But now, that the Wii is getting 3rd party support, and inevitablely crappy 3rd party games come along with that, it's a terrible thing.

::shakes head::

Yes but also it had plenty GREAT 3rd party games, wii does not have those.

Its just a small difference.

Just curious Killzone3, since you are criticizing the Wii's library, I figure I might as well ask, do you like sports games?

i play them, but not buy them.
i get bored to quickly, at a buddies house with a few others with some money on the game then its really fun.

I ask because of this:

According to gamerankings.com, there are 20 PS3 titles with a 7.5 or above and 13 Wii titles with a 7.5 or above.  If we take away all sports titles on both sides (including Wii Sports) it becomes 10 Wii titles to 10 PS3 titles.  Exactly even.  My point is simply this:  Depending on what you are looking for in a console, the Wii is getting plenty of good games.  There is a misconception that it's library is far below the PS3's at this point because the PS3 was flooded with high rated launch and soon-after launch sports titles.  It may not appeal to you, but it's certainly not devoid of any good games.

Not only are they sports titles, they are ports of sports titles, and they didn't recieve massive graphical overhauls a la Ninja Gaiden.

Wii has plenty of great 3rd party games on the way.  Admittedly not much quality 3rd party games have come out so far, but 3rd parties admitted to being slow to realizing the potential of the Wii and got a late start.  So I'm still not sure why the 3rd party support is a negative thing.

Im sorry but it doesnt... I searched through gamespot, and I couldnt find good interesting action adventure games like mario and zelda. Seriously I think the only good games are rayman and the mario/zelda games :/

Guys you can't enlighten somebody who doesn't want to be enlightened. He'll just counter by saying something about the Wii Mafia or the KGWii.

Wii has some really good 3rd party games. Better than PS3 at this moment.

Godfather Wii is best version out and is really good.
Resident Evil 4 is fing awesome, again best version.Alot of VC stuff that is great already.
Rayman is a good title.
Then you have all of the sport and FPS games that are on nearly every system. Many of which are definately winners.

Plus, wait until this time next year and see the '08 holiday lineup as 3rd parties have been initially caught off gaurd with Wii's success.

I'd say No More Heroes falls into that category, though if that's not your cup of tea you may be out of luck.

No, just those who troll forums with baseless acusations of anyone console being forced over another. This thread was made a battle ground by you, not the Wii Aluminati.

Almost all of the major japanese third party developers have announced the devotation of massive amounts of projects and development to the Wii. The Wii caught everyone off guard. Just because it's too early for the titles to be announced yet doesn't mean they aren't comming. Also, unlike Sony, Nintendo doesn't need to broadcast all of thier future games two years in advanced to get people excited about their console. It's a simple difference in how business is done and a typical case of people using Sony as the measure for how other companies' behaviors should be weighed.
