Forums - Gaming - John Carmack on the Tech 5 engine for PS3/360/PC/Mac

These videos are very informative and interesting to listen to.

For those that do not know, John Carmack is the co-founder of id Software. He was the lead programmer on Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and Quake. His programming, along with John Romero's unique game design, led to the popularization of the First-Person Shooter (FPS) genre.

Interesting.

My initial thoughts on this whole mega-texture concept (everything effectively has a unique texture), is that it would kill any device without a harddisk. Moving around would require constant streaming of new textures.

Makes me think its more suited to the PS3 than 360 - although most 360s running these games will also have harddisks.

Also explains why it consumes so much data storage space (i.e. BluRay).

Wouldn't work effeciently on a Wii - but would on a DS (as accessing data on a cart is much faster than hardisk). Of course small cart sizes and texture caches might ruin the day.

I'll have to look into this more.

sony needs to pay them for engine optimization on ps3,
just like they did to Epic.
then they should give the engines away to 3rd party devs.. O.O

Like always no mention of the Linux port. ID software loves Linux and open source and have open sourced all their engines that were made before Doom 3. The Doom 3 engine will be open sourced and should be available 2008 and the open source games that come of it should be great.
