Forums - Sony - Sony's Disruption Strategy - For Next Generation

A disruptive strategy (at least how I see it) is kind of like a play fake and brings two things with it: 1) you can't always count on it being an incredibly risky move and 2) running a play fake right after a play fake is a bad move.

Sony just needs to pay better attention to its consumers and what they want and what they will pay for next time.

JJSeth: I invite you to celebrate with me on the PS2's 7th birthday in 2 months (North America Release). It has produced a fantastic number of good games.

Do consoles age in dog years?

See Ya George.

Believe me, the PS3 wont last 10 years...

Are you from the future? How can you say for sure that it won't be here for 10 years? The PS2 has been out now for 8 years, and is still going strong. I think it will easily last the full 10 years, possibly a couple more after that. However around year 7 or 8 they will bring out the next Playstation and have it sell just as they are now with the PS3 and PS2.

And leo, they will have a "next gen" for sony. Sure, the PS3 is a beast, but we don't even know for certain what the technology will be like in 5 or 10 years. When it comes to electronics it has been advancing at a very rapid rate, and there will be new technologies out that will trump even the ever powerful PS3.

Unless of course you think that the world will end before they can release the next Playstation. And if you do, I hope you're wrong. ;)

If by "going strong" you mean "selling better than the PS3" then yes, the PS2 is still going strong.

PS3: 5.51m/51w, avg 108,039/w (up 239)
360: 12.93m/102w, avg 126,764/w (up 625), leads PS3 by 7.42m (up 70k), avg lead 18,725/w (up 386)
Wii: 13.52m/51w, avg 265,098/w (dn 1,102), leads PS3 by 8.01m (up 90k), avg lead 157,059/w (dn 1,341)

If 360 sales stabilize, PS3 sales increases needed to pass 360 by...
01/08: (008w) +875.8%, 04/08: (021w) +344.4%, 07/08: (034w) +219.3%, 10/08: (047w) +163.5%

If Wii sales stabilize, PS3 sales increases needed to pass Wii by...

01/09: (060w) +269.0%, 04/09: (073w) +246.9%, 07/09: (085w) +232.6%, 10/09: (099w) +220.3%
If PS2 sales freeze, Wii sales increases needed to pass PS2 (as of Mar07, 108.4m) by...
2008: (008w) +4373.8%, 2009: (060w) +0496.5%, 2010: (112w) +0219.6%, 2011: (165w) +0116.9%
2012: (217w) +0064.9%, 2013: (269w) +0033.1%, 2014: (321w) +0011.5%, 2015: (376w) -0004.8%
At +0% it will pass it in 358w, the week ending September 19th, 2014, at an age of 409w (7y44w).
Current age of PS2: 7y37w.

There wont be a nex gen for sony, they said that ps3 will probably be there main console from here on out, why would they need a ps4 if the ps3 has only shown 30% of its power with uncharted? If something looks that good imagine using 60% of its power. Besides nintendo will be in the nex gen and that will probably there only competition, unless somebody else enters the game.

Please dont say that PS3 is Sony's main console from here on out...I tried to back this statement for so long and people would say "oh when the next Xbox comes out and the next Nintendo console comes out then its going to thrash the PS3" I look at them and say currently nothing is far superior than the Cell right now...the PS3 IMO AGAIN will last its 10 years fully....O_O

If the PS3 and 360 go the way of trying to copy the Wii and start churning out mini game collections and casual games above all else then I'll move to PC games for good.

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

I wonder what if it is the last console sony makes? It starts seling well and they hit its potential with a library as good as the ps2, and with firmware upgrades to add features, its possible who knows?!?!

I know leo-j and I agree who knows...people say PS3 has a slow start but look into the future thats when all the developers will get use to the system and some units will be out there....I think Sony will make another one but its not going to be for a long time...PS3 hardware is so freaking STRONG!!!...7 freaking Processors....thats alot and a good graphics card....Sony made a excellent piece of hardware and adding blu-ray...its just people are doubting it and I'm ignoring...PS3 is good but they have to prove with the games...and I'm starting to see the light with the coming releases....^_^

Erm... I think Takashii360's account has been hacked. Mods... MODS.

There is NO way that the PS3 is the last Sony console. Sony is in the console business for one reason and one reason only, and that reason is money. If the PS3 is Sonys last console Sony won't be able to make money, as it will hit a certain point when it just wont be able to sell anymore, and yet Sony would still need to support it through Firmware updates, customer service, etc, etc.

If the PS3 were the last Sony console I see 1 of 2 things happening:

1) Microsoft and Nintendo release their new consoles. People interested in new technologies and new fashions will buy the new consoles. After a while everyone else will get bored of their PS3s and buy one (or two) of the new consoles. All third parties will move their projects over to the other consoles. PS3 dies.

2) Microsoft and Nintendo copy Sonys stategy and never release a new console. The gaming industry would become stagnant. With other entertainment industries moving faster and faster, the gaming industry would slowly die. PS3 dies. 360 dies. Nintendo dies.

I wouldn't like to see either of them happening, but if I had to pick one, it'd be numeero uno

Sure, the PS3 is strong now, but is there any reason to think that it's going to be at all competitive with $300 consoles in five years? Let's say that, BluRay aside (since its costs are rapidly dropping), the thing costs about $600 to make right now. You're saying that it's going to cost a significant portion of that to get the same processing power and graphics card in five years' time?

It would also have to deal with the stigma of being old technology. There's a reason why Nintendo didn't simply release a motion-sensing peripheral for the Gamecube - the Gamecube is old news and no one cares about it. The Wii is new and exciting. After about five years, people are generally willing to shell out more money for a newer console.

this thread has the stupidest idea ever.. seriously. do i even need to explain that people would take tons of them, leaving uncertainty over how many unique people actually own the console? fanboys of other systems would also buy the things and smash them in mass. wow, EPIC FAIL for this thread
