Forums - Gaming - Why does Killzone 2 matter?

People are continually typing wait for MGS4, FFX111 and Killzone 2 to see PS3 skyrocket, and in the first two cases i totally understand why.  But why on earth is Killzone 2 placed in the same league as those two games, or for that matter dozens of other great titles across all systems.  I fully understand that Sony have hyped this game up as a graphical demonstration, but whilst this game looks pretty, people are deluding themselves if they believe its graphics are more than a minor step up from MGS4 and Gears of War.

But most importantly, the first Killzone was a very, VERY average game. Its reviews were far from stellar, and its commercial success is commonly put down to it being one of the few notable FPS on the PS2 (lets face it, shooters are the only thing the xbox beat PS2 on).  Having watched the first gameplay trailers of the second installment, my opinion is that the gameplay is very bland-looking, and if it stays that way this game doesn't deserve to be called a AAA title.  And given that by the time it comes out the PS3 will have an armarda of decent FPS (Haze, UT3, MGS4), i honestly think that the only reason this game is more than a blip on the radar is because Sony has made it clear they want it as their 'halo-killer.'

Conclusion! On graphics Killzone 2 will beat Halo 3, on gameplay it wont come close.  In fact, it wont come close to a lot of PS3 games or 360 games or Wii games on gameplay unless Sony does something drastic in the next six months.  PS3 fanboys, you have much better titles to look forward too, many of them exclusive! Dont hang your hat on a title that has never been anything more than an average flick, you deserve better!

I've wondered this too. Not that it'll be a bad game or anything, but to expect a Halo type impact seems like wishful thinking. It looks like another pretty shooter to me.

I understand that these games are what platformers were in the NES/Genesis/SNES days, in that most major games are going to be in that style. I just want a bit more variety. I'm perfectly fine with FPS/TPS, but the stories being told aren't too unique from another. Alien invasions, space marines and gritty urban settings are way too commonplace. Let's tell a different story, shall we?

Having said that, it will probably sell on hype alone. Hell, Red Steel did.

Current systems owned: Wii, 360. I'll get a PS3 when hell freezes over!... or when the price drops to a reasonable level. Whichever comes first.

I hoe it wasn't because of it's commercials. . . those things were terrible, lol.

I firmly believe that ANY advertising helps sell anything. The Red Steel ads. That terrible Nintendogs ad with the wigger tween. Those WTF PSP commercials with the talking animated rats.

Dumb, but all you gotta do is the get the name out there.

True, but just from the prospective that the acting in the Red Steel commercials was poor and comical.

Well, the ammount of time put into; and also Guerilla made a very good PSP game. Killzone: Liberation. Scored a 8.4 at Gamespot.

NO one, except for N'GAi, has played the game. What was Bungie's huge hit before Halo ......

In fact, wasn't Halo supposed to be an RTS originally? That would have been interesting.

*edit*

Actually, I believe that the 150 people that were invited to the special event were the only people to play it. I thought I heard Shane, from 1up, talking about it or somebody else talking about it. I could be wrong, but it doesn't matter because N'GAI has the only published actual gameplay preview, lol.

Who's N'GAi?

I still don't understand the big deal with Halo. Sure it perfected online gaming on consoles, but I don't find anything even remotely interesting about it, and why people are constantly searching for the "Halo killer"

IMO, Killzone 2 looks more interesting at this point than Halo 3.
