Forums - Gaming - Blu-ray Sales Sail To All-Time Highs

Further confirmation that Blu-ray sales continue to surge:

* Blu-ray had its best month of sales ever in October, with consumers buying 2.3 million discs, according to Home Media Research. That's the first time disc sales have surpassed the 2 million mark in a single month and it's nearly five times greater than the 470,000 discs purchased in October 2007.

* For the year so far, Blu-ray disc sales are running about four times higher than in 2007.

* Blu-ray disc sales have crossed the 20 million mark since the format was introduced, with 14 million of those (70%) sold this year.

* In October the 1,000 Blu-ray title was been announced for release.
And all of that is in the U.S. alone. Elsewhere the picture is even brighter in some countries such as Japan, where Blu-ray hardware sales already represent more than 50% of the total optical disc market and are expected to increase heading into the peak selling season. According to the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association, Blu-ray recorder and player shipments reached 138,000 units in the 12 months ending in September, or 107 times the previous year’s tally. It also noted that Blu-ray hardware now accounts for 31% of all home entertainment recorder and player sales.

Meanwhile, back in the U.S., Wal-Mart recently announced a big expansion of its Blu-ray Disc inventories and reported a 2.4% gain in same-store sales during October.

Wow that's impressive! I guess we can now say that blu ray will not die. I dunno if it will one day be the only discs on the market but at least, it will have enough sales to survive.

I've noticed something nice recently: french movies have a blu ray version now! It's pretty new because french movies have a small market (basically france+switzerland+belgium) and so it means that blu ray sales are profitable enough!

Even my mum asked me to buy a blu ray movie ("bienvenue chez les chtis" je sais c'est la loose mais bon, ce film attire les vieux comme des mouches lol).

Reduce price on the discs and even more people will buy :p

So Blu-Ray sales are actually increasing? Shocking!

Sarcasm aside, if the Blu-Ray association wants to impress me they can show me a graph of the evolution of its market share vs DVD.

If they sold 20 million discs so far in America, that's about three per PS3. Hardly a jaw-dropping statistic considering there are also standalone players.

Yeah, its difficult to be overly impressed by the 20 Million sales number given that the PS3 has sold over 40 Million pieces of software in the United States since it was launched. Certainly, Blu-Ray is demonstrating that it will survive and may become a dominant format but it won't become that important until 2010 or 2011 (as many of us predicted years ago).

2.4% increase in sale does not make a surge to me.

It the decimal point were one place to the left (24%), then I would take notice.
