Those 14 million PSN accounts include accounts created by PSP owners. Actually, you can create a PSN account via PlayStation.com without owning either a PSP or ps3. They're actually forcing you to do this right now, as the they're getting rid of the PlayStation Underground, so within the next few days the PlayStation.com forums will only be open to PSN members. If you don't link your PSU account to a PSN ID, your info will be lost.

and this is a bad thing? honestly who other than Sony fans or owners use Sony's PlayStation site? not that many. And they just recently linked the PSP to the PSN. PSP and PS3 users are using their existing logins.

I'm just saying that those 14 million accounts don't consist solely of ps3 owners, and that they can't be compared directly to XBL.

Your right, Sony is making the PSN way more universally unified which is actually a good thing and lends itself to a stronger brand presence in terms of support.

Agreed.

A somewhat decent way to determine the number of ACTIVE psn accounts linked directly to the ps3 would be to take a hit game/popular online heavy game and multiply their peak member count online and multiple that by that game's attach rate.  If you do this with a nice sampling of games and find an average you will have a close idea of ACTIVE PS3 PSN accounts.  Anyone up for the challenge?

Edit:  I understand this can gimp numbers by leaving people out who use the PSN Store for movies but any better ideas?
