Forums - General Discussion - Why the history channel pisses me off.

Romans Romans Romans!
Spartans Spartans Spartans!
NAZIS!.

Well... only partly.

It seems like they focus sooo much on western history it's irratating.  I mean can't a guy get a special on the Mongols every once in a while?  Or like... the three kingdoms period of China.  That's so popular it's got freaking books and like 20+ Videogames based on it.... yet i've never seen a history channel special on it.

Africa?  Hell you might as well assume Africa just spontaniously generated when settlers landed in America and they needed slaves!

And this is "History International".

I mean i know i could read books, and i do... but i really do enjoy just watching a history peice every once in a while with their cheezy renactements and bad segways to commercials.

My sentiment mirrors yours. I enjoy the programming offered by the History Channel but I wish they would expand their coverage of other historical periods and civilizations. A larger diversity would do a lot to increase the channel's appeal to me.

At least they stick in a big way to their name's mandate by showing history related docs. (Though History Canada has shit like NCSI and JAG)

As opposed to:
TLC (The learning channel): when is the last time anyone learned anything from TLC other than that house flippers are pricks and freaks are freaky;
A&E (Arts and Entertainment): Where is the art on A&E anymore (it's on Bravo in Canada)? A racist bounty hunter is not art and I don't consider it entertaining. Same can be said for all their paranormal and home improvement shows
Discovery: Discovery is generally alright. Mythbusters I greatly enjoy (much of that due to Kari Byron), but when they were on their custom cars and motorcycle kick, they lost a lot of credibility in my eyes.

You have to remember that at the end of the day The history channel is a business, just like any other. If programmes on Nazis and Romans sell to their target audience over those of Pre-civilised Africa then I don't see the problem.

I agree 100%, the history channel isn't exactly brilliant in the variety of it's content and I often find that reading offers me more scope. but I suppose Joe sixpack would rather just be entertained with popular history than abstract niche history.

I am uncertain what the HC's lineup usually consists of, but I do know they produced a documentary on "Shi Huangdi" this summer.

White is right, duh.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

I kinda lost track of Discovery went they went MTV on me (more and more series, less and less interesting stuff - obscure music/documentaries respectfully.)

So I feel your sentiment. I'd love to see more new things. Things I don't know yet.

There is other history besides Western History?

WTF?

Don't forget Jesus, they show a lot of stuff on Jesus and the Bible.

Well... they western world rocks, don't they?
I agree though, waaaaay too much WWII programs. Partly why I stopped watching history channel anything. Although, their "barbarian" series was pretty good (mongols, vikings, uh, some others)
Now, I usually only watch The Naked archeologist (not as "naked as it sounds, alright )
