Forums - Sony - SOE to unveil new game next week.

Next week SOE is unveiling a new game. For those unfamiliar with Sony Online Entertainment they are the MMORPG division of Sony. Known for making games like Everquest. They like Sony proper have had a lot of negative press in their circles. So if your a major Sony fan do not be shocked by any venom that comes through the cracks. Trust me these people really deserve what they get so you should not even try to defend them.

Anyway SOE actually plans to port most of their upcoming MMORPGs on to the PS3 console. So this is in effect would probably be a new exclusive game for the console. However there was no public beta which would make me think it is some card style of game from their Denver studio rather then a true MMORPG. Shame the console could really use an addictive gaming experience.

Next week will be a doozy for fests and such, what with BlizzCon, QuakeCon and Sony Online Entertainment's Fan Faire all happening at the same time.

SOE says they will be unveiling a new game at this year's Faire. In fact their own president John "Smed, not smeg" Smedley will do the honors during his first ever community address next Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Could be interesting. Gamers at the Faire will even be able to check out the game, which I saw a month or so back and which will go live later in August. (I'm under embargo until after the announcement, sorry.)

Other games at the event will include Pirates of the Burning Sea, Gods & Heroes: Rome Rising, Secrets of Faydwer, the next expansion for EverQuest, and Rise of Kunark, the upcoming expansion for EverQuest II. What, no Agency?

We won't be sending anyone to the event, but if you're planning on attending take plenty of pictures for us.

SOE has aquired so many reasonably talented developers that they should be able to produce far better games than they have. The depressing thing to me is that in a conversation with the average/typical MMO gamer there are more interesting and worthwhile new ideas than SOE has produced since Everquest was released.

Honestly, I think a company like SOE should hire some lurkers to hang out at message boards for games like WoW and Everquest 2 so they can farm the ideas of their gamers to make a more enjoyable MMO game; obviously most ideas would be useless but after you seperated the good ideas from the bad you'd be able to implement a unique and interesting game.

A decent Star Wars MMO would be all I needed to give Sony piles of cash...

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

I will try to keep my personal venom out of this debate. I was one of the unfortunate victims of the Star Wars Galaxies fiasco. So I have a deep seated psychotic hatred of this division of Sony. They really did a number on me.

However since you brought up Star Wars you might want to know that recently knightsoftheoldrepubliconline.com was recently registered by Tucows which is the registrar for Bioware. Furthermore Bioware, Obsidian, and Lucasarts in April I believe all renewed their license on the Kotor property on or about the same day.

So there is a good chance that a new Star Wars MMORPG is in development right now. Further more Bioware really has not tried to dispel the rumor about it. I guess we have to wait till after Mass Effect arrives to find out. Bioware could turn the license back into gold.

So many people played that abomination of a game. I can't imagine how many people would play if it has WoW's level of accessibility and polish.

Maybe we might here more on The Agency??

And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

Don't even get me started, SOE deserves to be tossed in a fire.

I think if more people read up a little more on what exactly SOE has done to customers they might have a different view of Sony as a whole. I never thought I would see a company do what this company did. Especially since they are a customer service oriented division. They certainly taught me how to never trust Sony.

Blaming a division within a large company is silly. There are different standards. The CS you get in Europe is guaranteed to be different than the CS you get in Japan. Every large company will have issues and often time they will vary. No company should be blindly trusted nor should any of them be blindly stereotyped.

I think it's only valid you hold SOE up with such great suspicion. They certainly deserve it.

I've played EQ for three years, I've had many friends in SWG. I honestly didn't have too much of a problem, but I've seen what people have suffered through with SWG. Honestly the MMO crowd is the whinest bunch of people on this planet. Internet + exaggerated sense of entitlement + passion x time invested.

I can see how you'd hate Sony Online, but I don't think it should apply to the rest of them.  Now if you were an avid MD user I could see how you'd be suspicious of Sony storage formats hehe.
