Forums - PC Discussion - Flash Memory

So I've been monitoring this flash thing for a tiny while now, they've also announced USB3.0 already with 4.8 gig per second transfer speed, backward compatible with older jacks, should be hitting in 2010:

The other part of Flash memory I was reading about is the size. Curently the 64 gig flash drives are worth thousands, but they do exist. How soon will it be until flash drives replace out good old slow HDDs? I also predict that not too far off after that we're gonna see games on flash drives instead of CDs, or BluRay, given the ridiculously fast data transfer. Apparently you can boot up Vista Enterprise in 35 seconds off of one of those. Absolutely sick. I predict the end of disk based distribution within several years.

Not a single comment? Not even 1 troll/flame about BluRay? I've miserably failed.

I dont see these overtaking the disc format for a long time. Mainly because it will cost alot when it first comes out and it will take a long time for it to be widely accepted.

The thing is that as they grow the smaller versions start becoming dirt cheap. The current speed of growth is far faster than the disk format so in several years we should be sitting in a TB or more. As for having it replace CDs and DVDs, the smaller ones are already starting to be dirt cheap. Make a design that's made for mass production, cutting all the extras they don't need, and I can see getting my games on a flash drive instead of a disk soon. Not to mention those transfer speeds, a flashdrive game plus a flash memory hard disk would mean near instant installs on your games, not to mention how much data you could be transfering during play.

Isn't flash memory already widely accepted?  I mean who doesn't own at least one flash drive these days?

Flash is definitely going to be the future of storage. At least in the near future.

i meant usb3 that will take some time for the public to buy and fully use

It's backwards compatible with the jacks we currently have. I don't see why 3.0 wouldn't be accepted. Besides, 5 GB/s is no laughing matter. In fact the generation after the next should be using flash drives, if the next one isn't.

I do think that it will overtake discs but it wont untill people finally have usb3 ports even though it is backwards compatible, it wont go at the same speed. the soonest that usb3 will be widely accepted is 2012, untill then discs will still be on top.

The disk being overtaken doesn't depend on speed. USB 2.0 is already faster, it oopny depends on size and price. As soon as flash drives can be mass produced as cheaply as CDs for the same storage is when we see the shift.
