Forums - Sales - Ps3 over taking the 360s growing lead....

The PS3 probably won't ever pass the 360 in lifetime sales. The battle takes place in the Western markets, Japan will be nearly a non issue even though the PS3 will win this region obviously. But since Japanese support for both consoles will most likely dry up due to the Wii's success, hardware sales for the 360 and PS3 in Nippon will drop to insignificant amounts for the most part of the rest of this generation.

The 360 and PS3 share the majority of their games, but Microsoft seems to have the slightly more important exclusives for the Western markets. That however is pretty much offset by Sony's stronger brand recognition in continental Europe. So the momentum between the two systems will mostly shift due to pricecuts and rarely due to a game release.

If we assume that the PS3 beats the 360 in Japan by an additional two million by the end of its lifetime, that still leaves the 360 with a four million lead in the Western markets and as mentioned in the previous paragraph, it looks unlikely that the PS3 could overcome this. The lifespans of both systems will end at pretty much the same time, because they are both dependent on each other in terms of third party releases, so the supposed advantage of a longer lifespan for the PS3 is unrealistic.

I'm impressed that this post came from you.

it's only the threads he starts that are crazy :p

What makes people so sure that when Final Fantasy 13 comes out, it will be attached to a PS3?

If I was waiting to purchase a system based on FF13, I would pick the Xbox hands down. Mostly because of the game library and Xbox Live service.

FF13 is coming out for the 360, just in case some of you forgot. ;)

not in Japan, in case you forgot ;)

 I double this lol.

I don't know... that exclusivity is in doubt with the decent 360 numbers that JRPGs often boost it up to... look at much smaller franchises doing incredable numbers on a tiny install base of less than one million.  The 360 will likely be at a million before the launch of FF13 and personally if they really wanted to get things going crazy they would fork out whatever it took to get FF7 remade... fund the game do the advertising whatever it takes...  If Microsoft bought the exclusive release of this remake it would cause hell to open up on earth... they would be like Conan driving the enemy before them and hearing the lamantation of their women/fan girls and it would be great foder on these forums... but it wont happen so I'll just wish on a star for no reason

In case you forgot, Japan represents something like 8% of the HD market at the moment. It's just not that relevant.

There's a reason why no 360 game engine designer claims the 360 to be more powerful, yet there are many developers stating the PS3 is far more powerful or that they haven't adapted their game engines enough to tap into its potential.

And almost every PS3 game has some combination of worse: texture, loading times, frame rate, anti-aliasing, bugs, or resolution as Eurogamer demonstrates every month.

The wait until devs get better at the PS3 is getting old. It's comparative low sales against the 360 is going to keep that from ever happening, it's not worth the time of effort. That and the PS3's botteleneck is it's weaker GPU.

Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

In case you forget, Japan is quite capable of buying multi-million units of major Final Fantasy releases.

Sure, the PS2 sold more units there, but the potential is there to sell at least 1 mil. copies LTD of this game in Japan alone.

Thats a pretty relevant figure.

out of interest:

FF X: 7.95 million units WW LTD of that Japan bought : 3.02 million (38%)

FF X-2: 5.21 million units WW LTD of that Japan bought : 2.41 million (46%)

FFXII: 5.09 million units WW LTD of that Japan bought 2.42 million (47.5%)

Maybe you could argue that this sites data is incorrect, but those numbers seem relatively relevant to me.

LOL, yup you're too tired to read. I never claimed that."

You were implying it by stating that all original Xbox games had seen sequels, and by purposely ignoring the fact that many new IP's and other games on the 360 are yet to come.

No, that's what you read into this. I am sure there will be fine new IPs on the 360 for the years ahead. If not Microsoft can opt to buy out some good software houses like they did with Mac developers Bungie or Nintendo developers Rare. However technically I believe the 360 is now at its peak. The real eye catching games from a technical perspective will be on the PS3, I believe this will dampen enthusiasm for the 360 during the course of 2009.

Yep, Mike.  That is what you believe.  But as such, I believe the opposite.  Since nothing the PS3 has done so far has been better in a technical standpoint than any 360 game, and with Gears of War 2 being universally accepted as the best console graphics to date (no point arguing as it is universal and I could care less about the few people who "believe" some other game looks better), I don't see it having any affect in 2009.

Again you say things like:

"The real eye catching games from a technical perspective will be on the PS3, I believe this will dampen enthusiasm for the 360 during the course of 2009."

Which of course is merely speculation.  I admit you are very intelligent and a much better debater than the common Sony fanboy, but you subtely refuse to acknowledge facts or possibilties just to believe your PS3 will be the leading HD console, thus making you just as much a fanboy.

@nightsurge

Oh NO my friend! You are sadley mistaken at what you said in the red. I am afraid you are in the very small majority who believe GoW2 has the best graphics, which in truth is barely an improvement over GoW1! Everyone who has been able to fully view the games in question KNOWS that Uncharted is still undoubtedly the BEST looking game of this generation. GoW2 struggles to pass MGS4(and I still things MGS4 looks better than it with textures that just scream at you). You can search for yourself, look up majority of any topic on which games looks better and most will say Uncharted. You may dismiss these allegations simply because it is a PS3 exclusive so you think its PS3 fanboy bias, but it is very much real my friend, there is no comparison.

And Even if GoW2 is not the best looking game of the generation, Graphics are not everything as I am sure you can agree. At some point Graphics take a back seet to functionality and immersion. Games like Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, MGS4, LBP take home those trophies as well unfortunately. Do you believe a game as exspansive as LBP can be done elsewhere to the same magnitude? Afraid not.MGS4 filled a dual layered disc, 50gb. That most definitely cannot be done on 360. Yes, you can say "Well, they could cut this, compress that, etc!" but in that case they could have cut this, compressed that in the PS3 version and got EVEN MORE out of the game. Killzone 2 graphics are unmatched as of yet. The game is said to trully impress.

You accused his last statement of being speculation, which it is. Yet can you blame him? Can you not see where he derives these assumptions? Think about the games that are said to be released in 09.

Heavy Rain-A living breathing world within itself, Cinimatic in execution, a game which never ends even if you die.

Uncharted 2-Beautiful, superb graphics, furthering the natural movements of the first game.

Killzone 2- The future holder of best looking game of all time banner. This is undeniable as anyone who has had hands on experience with it can tell you that the graphics are un rivaled. Gameplay is said to impress even further.

FFXIII?- This game is multiplat but the game was made specifically for PS3, supposedly fully utilizing the Blu Ray and the Cell. We are bound to see SOME technical marvels here as well.

WKC-Said to be another huge exspansive game to rival even the FF series. Traditional in execution with a new gen battle system to keep it fresh. Also ushering in the standard of JRPGs with online play which WRPGs have already adapted to.

HOME-to come out this year going into next. brand new experience entirely then what we are used to with gaming. Making the gaming virtual reality litterally it's/your own.

Sry for the rant, I am not trying to be hostile in anyway. Just saying, his points are very much plausible. And GoW2 being Best Grphix is just...well....wrong.

Greatness Awaits

PSN:Forevercloud (looking for Soul Sacrifice Partners!!!)

The mere fact that there are still debates about which game has the best graphics on the 2 platforms speaks volumes in itself...I think you can agree that Gears 2 still looks better than MOST ps3 games, which is why when looking at game functionality the much cheaper 360 can be perceived as greater value with pretty well much the same graphical capabilities…but since when has the mass market gone where the best graphics are anyway?

Exactly. Gears 2 visuals are better then anything on the PS3 right now BUT The games on Wii have worse graphics too but they sell more then 360/PS3 combined....Graphics is a personal preference. They dont make the gameplay better (im looking at you lair/haze!)

Nice boxart!

But to me, Game of the Year in 1997 was Goldeneye 007 easily.

Blasphemy!

@seraphic - I agree but no way would that be exclusive. If it was, Square would roll out 50 new IPs for 360 to "balance" everything out.
