Forums - Microsoft - XBox360 Elite? What's the point?

From what I understand, with a little bit of work you can get rid of some of the rubber on the connector without actually damaging anything and get both plugs in.

also, 1080p can only be transfered over HDMI so it depends on your TV whether you get any benefit from HDMI or not.

Good to know about the HDMI mod.  I don't think I would need to worry about (if I do get an XBox360) since my AV receiver can accept DTS, DD and PCM over HDMI.

I was under the impression that both the PS3 and XBox360 rendered their games in 720p and just upconverted to 1080p.  If this is the case then converting to 1080p would not improve the picture at all unless the XBox360 has a better scaler than your HDTV (highly unlikely).  In fact it could actually decrease picture quality if your HDTV does not have a native resolution of 1920x1080 pixels.  (If the XBox360 can render higher resolutions than component can support then upconverting to 1080p before sending it to the HDTV would probably generate a better image).

There is no reason for the Elite now.

It used to be a reason when it came out, since it was the first model to have Zephyr (?) and it had the huge hard drive compared to 20 gigs, and the HDMI output, and the HDMI cable. So for an extra 79 dollars on top of the pro's 400 price point, you got 100 gigs of space, a HDMI port, cable, and the new chipset. Not too shabby of an upgrade. But now it's 100 dollars more than the pro and you get 60 extra gigs and a HDMI cable.

IDK how they got away with pricing the sku further away from the pro, and it having less value, but they did.

Wow, I thought the Elite was $150 more than a Pro at launch.  It was a good deal then; now not so much.

I know that Gran Turismo 5 is natively in 1080p along with at least 1 basketball game, but I really don't care all that much myself since I only have a 720p TV. As for X360 games, I don't have a clue.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Nah.

The pro was 400 when the elite launched at 479.

Then the pro went to 350 and the elite to 450

Now they're 300/400.

So they raised the price difference, but took out value.  lol.

The point of the elite is that people can purchase a black 360 and when you tell people you have the elite, you're a true hardcore gamer. Pro and arcade can be purchased by any soccer mom and stuffs, so to differentiate, you go elite...

@Blappo

Thanks I was just at GameStop.com and checked it. I see its $100, is it worth it considering the 120GB HDD is $150. Should I just fork out the extra $50 and get that pack instead?

Obviously if you need the extra HD space now then the Elite is a better option.  With the ability to install games onto the HDD you might fill it up quickly.  I'm guessing the majority of people don't fill up their HDD unless they are buying alot on the marketplace.

just marketing... a lot of people always want to have the ultimate version of the console, so its all about that.. because if you have a lot of money then why not get an elite?? thats the question (i am not saying with that, that it has more value)

@Blappo

The thing is I have a Xbox 360 already, I was talking about whether I should get a 60GB HDD or 120GB HDD. I don't buy a lot from the marketplace. I do however buy movies though and the install games on HDD is a nice option. So I might just fork out the $100 and just get the 60GB, its only 40GB more.

@xlost7

Sorry I took your post to mean if you were buying a Xbox 360 and needed the 120GB HDD right away. I don't know what I would do if I had a 20GB HDD and needed to upgrade. The price of both HDDs are horrible. I would wait as long as possible since MS might release a larger HDD which should come in at the same price point as the 120GB is now.

The retail price for a 160GB 2.5" HDD is $65 and I doubt a 60GB or 120GB is much cheaper to produce. MS could probably switch the 120GB for a 250GB drive for less than $10/unit. I doubt they would do this unless they also upgraded the HDD in the Elite model. This would give MS bragging rights about the biggest stock HDD in a console.

@Blappo

So my best bet is to wait. Your right about the prices for these HDD. I mean $100 for a 60GB and $150 for a 120GB. I mean money doesn't grow on trees like apples do.

I will wait. I just wanted to take advantage of the new "game install on HDD" feature that is being tied in with the "New Xbox Experience".

Thanks, bro. I appreciate your in sight and will wait.
