Forums - Nintendo - Monster Lab IGN Review

Doesn't seem like anybody has posted this.  I'm surprised at how high the score was. I thought it would get at highest high 60s from the looks of the games. I might get it if there is ever a drought of games I want to buy, which won't be for a long time if ever. So if anybody is interested here is the review.

Monster Lab is undoubtedly destined for retail obscurity, but if you somehow stumble upon a copy and happen to be in the market for a well-made kids' game, this stylish, polished and fun title definitely fits the bill. It's got a few problems in the area of unnecessary repetition, some flow-breaking load screens, some pointless mini-games and some over-baked dialog, but overall the presentation is a cut above most Wii games, the monster-building mechanic incredibly deep and the turn-based battle system enjoyable. So if you like games like Pokemon, or if your kids do, give this one a try. The fact that it's $10 cheaper than your average Wii offering makes it a more worthwhile purchase.

Rating Description

8.0 Presentation
Surprisingly polished and stylized. Virtual castle, voice acting, and an incredibly amount of depth. Some loads.
7.5 Graphics
Pretty, atmospheric castle complete and equally stylized, fluid character models. All sorts of technical effects. But the overworlds are a little ho-hum.
7.5 Sound
All right, the audio work is a little hammy, but our hat is off to the developer for recording so much voiceover. And the music fits the theme of each world or environment.
7.5 Gameplay
Hard to categorize, but fun. Feels like Pokemon in many regards, except there's more customization and no trading. Lots of minis mostly complement the rest.
8.0 Lasting Appeal
Highly customizable monsters -- hundreds, if not thousands of variations in all. A fun single-player package and an online multiplayer mode to boot.
7.9
Good

Interesting. It was definitely something that caught my eye (through word of mouth on forums), so it's definitely on my list (although not a high priority).

Bought this Saturday for my Son.

he is 7, he plays world of warcraft, computer games, loves pokemon, bakugan, plated the force unleashed(beat it) etc.

he has 10+hrs playing so far -- loves the game.

supposedly 1.5 MILLION combinations of parts for monster building

oh and he is only up to the 2nd town.. he loves building monsters.

edit... OH yes, The Best Buy i went to didn't even have it on the SHELF yet...it had been out for 3 days and not one copy was out on the shelf to be Sold.

typical IGN as expected I hope this game will sell though...

end of core gaming days prediction:

E3 2006-The beginning of the end. Wii introduced

E3 2008- Armageddon. Wii motion plus introduced. Wii Music. Reggie says Animal crossing was a core game. Massive disappointment. many Wii core gamers selling their Wii.

E3 2010- Tape runs out

This one's sitting in my pile of 'too be played' games--hopefully sometime before 2009 -_-

Probably gonna get it if it keep getting good scores. an average above 75 would be good.

Hmm how much does it cost? If it's budget priced then I might pick it up.

But definitely a good review... sounds like a good game to keep me busy for awhile.

I could say this game look so much better than average wii games, i'll try this one if i have a chance. :)
