Forums - Sales - Why have most of the games bombed shamefully in Japan this gen?

Yeah, what happened in Japan? Wii DS and PSP fell off and DS and PSP were only recently saved by refreshes.

It all happened so suddenly too. I mean, if it were a decrease over time, then it isn't as shocking. But it was as if the market crashed in a span of 2 or 3 weeks.

Even a year later, no one knows what happened :s

Bet - "PES 2009 (PS3) will sell (closer to) 150k first week in Japan" - Pooperscopper
"It will sell closer to 125k" - Me I agree.
ME = OWNED :(

End of '09 Predictions:

Wii: 78 million
X360: 35 million
PS3: 27 million

It's primarily because 220 of said 380 games are on very poorly-performing consoles in Japan - the X360 and PS3.

Since neither console has an amazing userbase, it's kind of hard to sell games when no one owns the system.

Go look at the DS - it's selling games hand over fist, and it's a HANDHELD for crying out loud. It has the user base, and the users are certainly lapping up everything that's made available.

mgs4 sold quite well in japan. so would tales of vesperia if it were on ps3.

Yet neither game holds a candle to what Nintendo has released on the Wii. Had MGS4 released on the Wii, it'd be safe to assume that it may have sold better (same with ToV, obviously).

Most every game (at least that's my assumption) should sell better on the best-selling console. Maybe the Wii doesn't have the right userbase yet, but you'd like to think that it'd give a developer the best chance in Japan, of making money. But unfortunately, we haven't seen many impressive non-Nintendo results. But I think it does prove that if the developer tries, it may be able to do well.

but the problem is that the 3rd party sales on wii arent really that high.

Not true. The Wii sells more SW than the PS3. The 360 is a little ahead of the Wii, though that's because it's been out longer.

In Japan, MGS4 sold only a bit over 100k more than DQS (DQS 500k+, MGS4, 600k+)--an on rails DQ spin off. Goes to show if you put a big game--preferrable a main game--on the Wii it'll sell really well.

That proves that DQ can sell tons even if the game sucks.
