Congressman: Obama wants Gestapo-like force

GOP rep invokes Nazis, Soviets, but Bush backed Obama's civilian corps idea

WASHINGTON - A Republican congressman from Georgia said Monday he fears that President-elect Obama will establish a Gestapo-like security force to impose a Marxist dictatorship.

"It may sound a bit crazy and off base, but the thing is, he's the one who proposed this national security force," Rep. Paul Broun said of Obama in an interview Monday with The Associated Press. "I'm just trying to bring attention to the fact that we may — may not, I hope not — but we may have a problem with that type of philosophy of radical socialism or Marxism."

Broun cited a July speech by Obama that has circulated on the Internet in which the then-Democratic presidential candidate called for a civilian force to take some of the national security burden off the military.

Obama's comments about a national security force came during a speech in Colorado in which he called for expanding the nation's foreign service.

"We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we've set," Obama said in July. "We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded."

The Obama transition team declined to comment on Broun's remarks. But spokesman Tommy Vietor said Obama was referring in the speech to a proposal for a civilian reserve corps that could handle postwar reconstruction efforts such as rebuilding infrastructure — an idea endorsed by the Bush administration.

Broun said he believes Obama would move to ban gun ownership if he does build a national security force.

Obama has said he respects the Second Amendment right to bear arms and favors "common sense" gun laws. Gun rights advocates interpret that as meaning he'll at least enact curbs on ownership of assault weapons and concealed weapons. As an Illinois state lawmaker, Obama supported a ban on semiautomatic weapons and tighter restrictions on firearms generally.

"We can't be lulled into complacency," Broun said. "You have to remember that Adolf Hitler was elected in a democratic Germany. I'm not comparing him to Adolf Hitler. What I'm saying is there is the potential of going down that road."

A little known fact, but the US Marine Corps is directly controlled by the President. He can use them as he sees fit without the restrictions that bind the sister branches. Clinton used this to good effect in his term... I know cause I was wisked off to Haiti in the middle of the night on an Executive order... right after a blowjob was admitted.

A little known fact is that the President is Commander in Chief of the whole military, and could do that with any branch. It's usually the marines because they are the most mobile ground force. He just has to let congress know after a certain amount of time and they will have to approve funding for longer engagements or to declare war.

Yeah I've seen some videos floating around the YubeTube about how Obama's national civilian whatever is a fascist army that will bring in the new world order and a bunch of other crap, but it's even funnier to hear it from a congressperson.

That last quote is amazing. "Now I'm not comparing him to Hitler, I'm just saying he might be just like Hitler."

There are restrictions of movement of troops on the sister branches... time restrictions as well... US Marines don't have those kinds of restrictions.  The fact that it cost less money to send Marines in helps the situation... Semper Gumbi ... we often would take money that was set asside for training if we went out to do some real world things.  It's been a while since I've gotten out... and they joined that stupid joint combat operation after being threaten by the Secretery of Defense, but I doubt to much has changed.

I uh... post a thread here if you ever run for office so I can remember not to vote for you buddy.

There's some major flaws in this reasoning.

1) Hitler had a militant force BEFORE the Nazis got elected. They were the disenfranchised WWI veterans and some unemployed men. There are no militant groups aligned with either political party.

2) Germany had a split executive branch that had a combined strength greater than the executive branch in the US. Hitler assumed both roles only after gaining legislative powers.

3) The Nazis never won a majority of seats in a fair election.

4) After the Reichstag fire, the 1933 election gave the Nazis a majority rule only if their allied parties were included. He then persuaded other center and right parties to vote for the Enabling Act - giving legislative powers to Hitler and his cabinet.

These are some stark political differences.

Obama was calling for an extended Peace Corps... National service is a big thing for him. In fact, one of his major policy propositions is giving tuition credits to any public university in exchange for community service or volunteer work. 

Glad to see American stupidity is being represented in Congress too. These are the kind of statements that have turned people away from the GOP. The American public may not be the brightest group of people in the world, but they know political misdirection when they see it. And this is about as flagrant as it gets.

I mean seriously, this stuff may fly during the campaign season, but let it go after the guy has been elected. It just makes you look like even more of a partisan.
