Forums - Nintendo - Will the Wii ever match the 64 in terms of awesome platformers?

^^

The quality of platforming on the 64 still keeps me coming back, almost all of my favourite games of all time come from the 64...

The 64 had Mario 64, Zelda OOT, Zelda MM, as well as Banjo Kazooie 1 & 2 and Donkey Kong 64.

Will the Wii ever have that many awesome platformers to brag of? i certainly hope so...

I don't think so. Plaformers were much more popular back then so there won't propably be that much of them.

I don't think the two Zeldas qualify as platformers.

In number of platformers "to brag about", Wii propably will beat N64, but it's not going to beat SNES.

Ei Kiinasti.

Eikä Japanisti.

Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

unfortunately for me i only ever got a very small sample of platformers on the SNES (I never owned, played at a neighbours). I played DKC and Lion King and that was about it

well, there will probably be some good low-budget platformers released on wiiware. i don't know about full-blown disk games though.

come try out the computer game i've been working on for my high school senior project, titled sling ball. http://vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=47568

The Wii has already Mario Galaxy, de Blob, Wario Land and Lost Winds. The Story-Modus from SSBB is mainly a plattformer. Next comes Mushroom Men, Sonic Unleashed, Sonic and the Dark Knight.

its going to look empty with Rare missing of course but considering what's coming soon along with De Blob, etc there is plenty of quality

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

The N64 really did have quite a few excellent platformers (Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie 1&2, Conker's Bad fur Day, and Donkey Kong 64) ... I wouldn't be surprised if the Wii had more platormers that were "better" than these games but I don't expect the Wii to have nearly as many platformers which have the impact of these games.

I think it can. The Wii has only been around for not quite two years and has some great platformers for it. I think as time goes on and the installed base keeps growing, more games will be made. Now if it can match the quality of the SNES whick I think has one of the best libraries of games for any system.

I'll come up with something better eventually...

Well no, I think. Rare's gone, and platformers aren't a popular genre of gaming anymore. I also don't think Zelda games qualify as platformers, but that's another discussion entirely.
And like HappySqurriel said, no platforming game that comes out now is ever gonna have the impact the N64 classics had. Still, Wii already has some excellent platformers. :)
