Forums - Website Topics - Vgchartz has a bad rep

Sorry about that peeps. Rant over (and bad spelling). I just feel for the people who put the effort into this site and other similar to this site. Really people should look at data from their own sources and have a look at the trend instead of saying Site X is better than Site Y because it's numbers were closer for one game realease. It's just bad blood and competition. I have visited many other sites who run numbers and to be honest I'm happy with this site due to lack of rabid fanboys (who post bollocks anyway) and no flashy graphics used. It just tells you straight on this site and that is what I like about it.

Good to see this site is still going

@WiiStation360: Exactly mate.

I got a bit carried away, it just boils my piss when people moan about numbers.  As far as I am concerned they can visit every store in the world everyday for sales and the bastards still wouldn't be happy.

Deservingly so.

The community of VGC is more concerned with winning fanboy wars with the other consoles fans, calling the sites numbers into question whenever their prediction doesn't come true, and heralding the site whenever they do. That kind of flakiness is very, very detrimental to the site since we're more focused on whose e-penis is bigger, and which consoles fans can be happy, rather than passing on the good news that is this site to other places and people.

If we could all find the common ground, which is making the site better rather than bitching and moaning when numbers aren't what we expect, or arguing over whether or not a game met your personal expectations or not, we'd be so much better off. Cause the reality of the situation is that once you close your laptop, or turn your computer off, life goes on beyond what someone said about the sales of your game on your console, and we should be more concerned with making the site better than worrying about things that do not affect everyday life so much.

/rant?

Having a bad reputation on shitty sites is actually a good thing.

Anyway... since a few vgchartz articles has been posted on digg (mostly pro xbox 360 articles), people on digg started to trust the site more.

How many cups of darkness have I drank over the years? Even I don't know...

vgchartz uses numbers from the NPD, so our numbers pretty much have to be spot-on

If you are saying that VGChartz uses publically available information to confirm its estimates and determine if/when any corrections might be necessary, then yes.

If you are saying that VGChartz does nothing more than parrot the numbers put out by NPD, then you are mistaken -- if for no other reason the VGC numbers EXIST FIRST!

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

VGChartz can't be trusted to have results that are more accurate than a 10% margin of error. Those of us who understand and accept that can appreciate the site for what it is and what it does.

Those who think that VGChartz numbers are presented as inerrant or official have reason to be suspicious. It does not help when VGC staff, in shameless attempts at self promotion, use their numbers to issue press releases that state when consoles or games reach certain milestone within a narrow time frame.

It's because VGChartz data is found by only a couple of people, and the majority of its staff are just gaming enthusiasts not professionals.

way to agree with them meanie

I'm not agreeing with them, I'm just saying that's a valid reason why many do not trust VGChartz and why you should not take its data 100% seriously. You can use the data as esitmates.

After the fact. The numbers usually have to be retroactively corrected. The good thing is that VGC tends to be very open about this, and will highlight the differences between their estimates and NPDs. This means that only recents sales (within the last month) will be unreliable (if you want better than a 10% margin), while long terms sales (most notably console sales) will be relatively accurate as the last month makes up only a small % of the overall sales.

So Aussies shouldnt trust Gfk data then???

I believe Vg Chartz but would be great see a detailed breakdown of how you guys sample markets, especially outside of the US, in order to prove that your not totally full of it.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Oh and anyone thats worked in market research for over 5 years like i have knows never to trust ANYTHING because people lie, cheat, big up themselves, average out figures, guess, etc etc.

Its really about knowing that nothing is ever perfect, although VG's numbers match other figures though.

I would not say they match... however they are in align with... If they matched, then someone would be copying...
