How short does a single player mode have to be to be considered too short?

I have fully enjoyed and felt filled with Braid's 5 hour and ICO's 6 hour adventures, so it must be shorter than 5.

It really just depends on the game and what the MSRP of the game is. The lower the MSRP, the less you can expect. The more RPG-based the game is, the more you should expect. Those are just two good thumb rules.

Depends on the type of game, the price, and the quality. Super Mario World is still worth more than just about every game in my opinion.
Anything below 6 inches becomes difficult.
...come on now, you knew it was coming! Anyway I'd say it about 10 hours. Metroid Prime definitely is considered "short" in my book but was still very satisfying.
Depends on whether it has MP, replay value, or is just a fantastic game
Anyway, I would say 8 hours is generally fine
