"Also, though I'm not very well read in graphic novels, I'm fairly sure that a graphic novel about Batman written by a genre writer isn't the height of the medium."
Do a search on Google for a list of the top 10 graphic novels ever written. I'm sure you'll find The Dark Knight Returns to be consistently in the top 3. And if that's all you know about The Dark Knight Returns then you obviously don't know much about the book. It is an excellent expose of the idiotic, fascist policies that typified America under Reagan (and that would reappear in much worse form under George W. Bush leading to the present crisis the nation is in). It also deals with how a classical hero can be reborn in the modern age but in order to be successful he will also have to become a bit less noble than the revered heroes of the past. The Dark Knight Returns is truly a stunning work of literature.
"That's the problem with threads like this: You have people who aren't very well-read or experienced in high culture trying to pin down what costitutes a high-culture video game. It's like having someone who's only eaten fast food all of their life try to be a critic of haute cuisine. You just can't decide what's good or bad if you don't have the requisite "worldliness" to do so."
So, I suppose that only the people that attended whatever schools you did are the only people that can make informed opinions about such things? I think it would be pretty funny if Hunter S. Thompson, Jim Thompson, or Charles Bukowski were alive and you walked up to one of them and made some kind of statement like that.
My most anticipated games: Whatever Hideo Kojima is going to do next, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Gran Turismo 5, Alan Wake, Wii Sports Resort. Cave Story Wiiware.
If I had to pick a game other than Metal Gear Solid 4, then No More Heroes would be close to the top of my list. I haven't played it or even know what the storyline is but it has a very cute female lead, and it is supposed to be in the film noire genre. So, it sounds like it is up my ally. If I had money and a Wii, then I would definitely buy No More Heroes.

I was going to say "Animal Crossing" for just that reason.
Except mine is valid. See:

Really, the best stories are often the ones you make yourself...

Paul has you there, Garcian. You just gave him his first victory, lol. On all the "best graphic novels" lists you'll find, there are probably two universal novels on them, and those would be Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, and Watchmen.
If there was a third, it'd probably be Year Zero, which is also a Batman graphic novel. Surprisingly(or unsurprisingly to graphic novel and comic fans) Batman has always been a very compelling subject that has drawn the attention of the best artists in the medium.
....so yes, lol. A Batman graphic novel is the pinnicle of the genre, along with a novel about a dude in an Owl outfit doing the girlfriend this blue guy... ;D
Better than Blackhole, better than From Hell, better than League. Batman:TDKR, Year Zero, and Watchmen. Those are it. Surprising, no?
I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.
NO NO, NO NO NO.

First off: Year One.
Second: Sandman kicks the holy living dog Hell out of every Batman story Frank Miller ever wrote. Frank Miller writes pulp. His works are not the height of the medium. His best work, which is arguably literature, is Ronin. Which is stomped by V for Vendetta, Moore's run on Swamp Thing, the original Sentry series... I could go on.
I'm going to go with Dr. Mario Online RX....epic story fellas

First, granted. I'm not really into comics, lol, but what I said is true.
Second, I can't comment on Sandman, but I can comment on popular opinion and its disagreement with you.
The Dark Knight Returns is an epic graphic novel. Nothing stops the shit out of it. Nothing.

"Popular opinion" must come from people who havn't read Sandman, then - when people who are really into comics talk about the kings of the medium, they mention two people: Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman. Watchmen is considered the single greatest volume in the medium, but collectively Sandman is thought to have achieved something even greater. These stories exist on a plateau that DKR cannot hope to reach.
Year One was better than DKR anyway.
