Forums - Gaming - To RPG lovers: why I can't embrace the genre? T_T

I have read that post where Gamepro chose their best RPG's and well there are tons of people complaining/agreeing..which is fine but personally I could never, ever understood RPG's. I know, you may say is a matter of taste but I don't think so. I think that the problem is in me more than nothing.

My experience with RPG'S have been terrible:I could never pass the character that disable your controllers in Super Mario RPG, I fell asleep in Chrono Trigger,The turn based battles from Final Fantasy 7, 8 and 9 founded very tedious,I never get to the 2d part of FF6 because I ran out of time in the part where kefka mad ethe big disaster....and so on.

As you see I haven't palyed many but I dunno what's wrong, Maybe I started with the wrong games? Need to be more patient? are WRPG's better/different? Or maybe I need to get used? I dunno. Many people talk about RPG's and I feel that I am missing something great. I can play technically any genre but I feel like intimidated by the huge numbers and long battles from RPG's.

What do you think?

Try earthbound out it is a quirky satirical play on western culture, its very different from other rpgs

Fact: Earthbound is the greatest game ever made

Well, Some genres just aren't for some people. Nothing wrong with that.

I think you need to give Earthbound a try, maybe the humor and such would keep you interested. Maybe not, but it'd be worth a shot. (It's for the SNES, just in case you didn't know)

Edit: My, I was beat, and by someone saying pretty much the same thing, go figure.

The Mother 3 Fan Translation is done! Everyone go get it right now! (Mother3.fobby.net)

Play Earthbound for the SNES ; ; Do it, it's awesome!

Well you should try a WRPG once. WRPG's =/= JRPG's.

Earthbound may be unique in its story and art style, but the gameplay is as standard as the genre gets.

You seem to have a few Mario games in your collection, maybe you could start into something like Paper Mario (N64) or Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (GC). The portable Mario & Luigi games are also excellent.

Hates Nomura.

Maybe you should try an ARPG. They tend to keep you more interested because you actually get to move around and choose your attacks and everything else.

ARPG? o_O

How much are that different? besides the artwork

Also Fallout 3 which is out right now is a WRPG and could ease you into the RPG transition. I don't know which way is the best to start as I started out playing Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy when I was 4, so I couldn't tell you if WRPG's would lead to you liking RPGs. I don't enjoy WRPGs as much as a good RPG, (i still enjoy them though) i don't even consider them in the same genre at all.

That's for PC, right?
