Forums - PC - First blu-ray game for PC!

And on PC switching out a CD doesn't matter because all the game content is on your computer. You will only have to be putting in the play disc, if even that, after you install the game. On consoles it is more of an issue because the whole game stays on the disc and that is where the system is reading it off of.

Not for a while.... from what I understand 3 DVD's cost less than 10 cents now. Correct me if am wrong.

I think that too many of you weren't around in the days when Windows95 and MS Office 95 came on around 20 1.44" disks. Installing both products was a real pain in the ass.

More storage space is always a good thing.

In 1997/1998, as DVD drives became more common in people's computers, the first DVD based games started to show up ... It wasn't until 2003/2004 that DVD based games (really) started to outnumber CD based games. There were two things that made it take so long, DVD drives had to become readily available and inexpensive and it had to be cheaper to produce 1 DVD disc rather than multiple CDs.

The problem with Blu-Ray is that the drive doesn't offer much value to a PC user without the software being printed on it because (while you could probably notice a difference) High Definition video on your PC does not add that much value over standard definition, and your PC is far from an ideal watching environment. DVD (initially) got a pretty big boost from data archives because a writeable DVD disc provided a ton of storage space compared to hard-drives of the time, and there wasn't many other mass stoarge options ... In contrast, a single sided Blu-Ray disc is a fraction of the size of a modern hard-drive and USB based external hard-drives are very inexpensive.

Until Blu-Ray drives become so inexpensive that they're included as standard hardware on most PCs, and most people upgrade to Blu-Ray if they have a problem with an old DVD drive, I don't see many companies delivering their product on Blu-Ray as a standard.

What I'm wondering is whether soon games will start coming out on Flash Drives. The speed at which the jumps are made is ridiculous, it's already up to 8 gigs on one of those small little things. 3 more and we're gonna be at 64, good amount over BluRay also MUCH faster read/write speed. We should start seeing those 64 gig sticks in several years, and all you need for that is a USB, no need for a new special expensive drive. By the time BluRay comes around to being financially plausible for both consumers and companies it might be too late. I personally can't wait to hold 64 gigs worth of data on my keychain. "Oh yeah this one here is Red Alet 4, and this is Elder Scrolls 5, and this one next to my car key is Starcraft 2: Protoss."

One DVD can install over 15gb of Data, 2 could do 30 im pretty sure thats about as much as you'll want for a long time now.

Tease.

It happens in germany, the "game" is in fact a compilation of 30 games. What do you think, will this be followed by (many) others?

I don't think it'll be followed unless it makes great profit

We don't like your type 'round here, with your "logic" and "good ideas".

Blu-ray ftw.

Just saw a 16 gig Flash Drive. In two more iterations BluRay will become completely useless for games, hopefully for everything considering how much better flash memory is.
