Sony better think twice about this, massive price drops are a requirement if they want any chance this gen

What do you you want them to say?

"We're going to drop the price of the 80GB PS3 to $500 right after we sell out of 60GB PS3s.  Buy them up!"

They are not thinking about not dropping the price again.  This wasn't even thread worthy...

Microsoft is saying they aren't going to drop their price as well, but does anyone believe they will never do it?  Of course not.  As others have said, you can't announce you are thinking about a price drop.  You announce price cuts.

No i'm saying they need to make the 60 GB like $399 and the 80 GB $499 tops, cut another $100 off the price

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Some analyst or all the analyst?$100 dollar drop on the ps3 increased sales but the wii will sell better simply becuase of the price and inovations it has, if ps3 were to be priced at $399.99 I would think it would be selling almost as good as the wii.

There is no way of saying it better leo-j...^_^

That's funny, because back in June, Sony DID announce that they were gonna do a price drop before Christmas:

FT: How much lower can you afford to bring it down?

HS: That’s what we’re studying at the moment; that’s what we’re trying to refine. [...]

FT: Will you come up with an answer by Christmas?

HS: Yes, of course.

Another one (different story):

I think Sony wants the PS3 to become a "how to fail a business endeavor" case study.

it's not as if Sony are going to say:

"hell yeah! we're gunna drop the price by another $100 in a few months time! don't bother buying a PS3 now, they'll be cheaper in November!"

Because that would be dumb.

maybe they're not even thinking of it as a price cut anyway... that 60GB system will be gone by then, and if they make the 80Gb price $100 lower, its not a price cut, its an SKU price cut/bringing it down to the 60Gb price point.

I tend to believe the exact opposite of what anyone at Sony says. Thus far the main ones that stick out:
The PS3 is soldout everywhere. I will give you $1200 for any PS3 you find in stores.
There will not be a pricecut at least until 2008 and it will not be as large as the PS2 pricecut.

The last part of the 2nd statement can be considered true as percentage wise, the PS2 had a larger pricecut but the rest were quite untrue.

To cash in my CC rewards points for $300 in Circuit City gift cards to purchase a 360 or not: That is the question.

wtf, to all you people saying it's terrible that Sony's not going to drop the price anymore...

They might not, but I bet they will...but they would NEVER announce a price cut, just like they denied all the rumors before the current price cut...it would kill sales if they announced that there would be a price cut sometime later this year...

seriously people...

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Agreed that this isn't important. Like a week before the price cut they were still saying "No price cuts at this time llololll sorry"

I don't understand why Sony PR can't reign in their executives. They should be saying something like:

"I can't comment of pricing directly, but we are always committed to providing our users with the best possible value."

Maybe the Execs are too arrogant to talk with PR.
