Forums - General - Florida has banned gay marriage

What's really screwed up about Am.2 is that it blocks many benefits of all unwed couples. This makes me sad. Also, John Tegg (R) lost to Demmings (D) for Orange county Sheriff. I am a Democrat ashamed that Democrats voted for Demmings; he is corrupt and lazy. Tegg is the only Republican I voted for this time.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

And Obama is not going to help aswell he is also against gay marriage =/...; It is sad we are fucking 2008 and still countries are against it =/.

Nah man, that is just one of those things Dems say to get elected... it's not exactly the highest priority though for the Federal Government right now.

Its really sad that Florida has told me my relationship doesn't mean anything. I understand that some people have religious reasons to believe marriage is between a man and a woman but does that mean that if I get sick my partner wouldn't be able to visit me in the hospital? Does it mean that we shouldn't be entitled to the tax breaks that straight couples have the option to receive if they get married?? If you want to say marriage is between a man and a woman that's fine.. but gay people should have a legal equivalent, which we can't have since the amendment passed.

Its a question of civil rights.

I think you are probably a little further left than me, but this is largely where I stand on the issue.  Marriage is a religious institution that i believe should be respected for what it is.  That means a man and a man cannot be married ever.  I don't even believe a state has a right to change the rules of marriage to allow that.

But when two people share a life together, the things the state DOES control like taxes and superannuation should be tailored to everyone's needs equally.

Aw, it makes me sad to hear about news like this, why ban gay marriage? They are legitimate humans too.

EXACTLY.  I like the way you put it.  That's why civil unions are there.  It is the opportunity for same-sex couples to enjoy all if the same civil liberties that straight-couples enjoy, just without the religious part.  This way everyone's happy.  The religious people still have their religion's respect, and others have their liberties.

To be honest, that is something where I see the view. A union between a man and a man (or two women) should have the same taxation etc. as a union between a man and a woman. But a marriage is a religious custom and this is in all religions a thing between a man and a woman.

So remove all taxation (and other) advantages for a marriage and change them so they only apply when a couple (in whichever form) has children.

The florida law banned the state marriage, not the religious marriage... that's the problem with the ammendment. It prevents even civil unions.

ehhhh I feel like the nation gets more and more homophobic, not better. We just got a lesbian couple from harlem at work. I made buddies with one of them but everyone else huddles together and talks about how they are "weird" and come up to me and say "THEY KISS EACH OTHER ON THE LIPS!!!! THATS NOT RIGHT!!!" I find it kind of disgusting that people are still this intolerant.
