Forums - Sony - Advantages of Blu ray

Honestly, anyone who says "It's not that much better than DVD" is either blind or hasn't actually watched a movie in 1080p.

The first movie I watched on Blu-ray was Crank (only in 720p to boot) and I was amazed at how you could see each of the guys individual facial hairs.

I don't think you read my previous post at all, either that or please go learn some reading comprehension.

@Loud

 The ability to run DVDs is completely irrelevatn I agree. The fact a BluRay player runs DVDs is as well. It's still priced at a much higher point than a normal DVD player.

Myself and everyone I know that has seen Blu is blind or hasent seen a movie in 1080P. Blus are a slight upgrade. IF/when movies are shot in HD(Planet Earth) it will be a different story.

It seems that most people that see the drastic difference in blu/dvd are videophiles and PS3 owners. Most regular people see a slight difference.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

Fact- The big difference in HD comes from the TV. If you have an upconverter player or just play DVD's through a Blu-Ray player, DVD's don't look that much less of quality if you're watching it on a 1080p TV.

I have an upconverter and a 46in 1080p and when I watch DVD's, they don't look that different from the stuff I watch in 1080p on HDTV channels. And all the stuff people mention about seeing individual hairs, sweat and other little details, I see that stuff on my regular DVD's now that I watch them upconverted and on an HDTV.

I'll come up with something better eventually...

If blu-ray players drop sub $150 I will grab one. I won't buy any discs though. Just get them from NetFlix. It all depends on how well the whole NetFlix HD stream works. I do not have that great of bandwidth so it probably won't be too good. Unless it is able to buffer a hell of a lot.

I love how people try to downplay blu ray as if its garbage cause they're fanboys meanwhile blu ray has huge advantages over dvd.

1. Space- 50gb dual layer, nuff said much more than dvd and pioneer is working on a 500gb disc, Having more space only makes games better by putting no limit on what a developer can do.

2. Physical Quality- These discs can take a beating, just search youtube if you don't believe me

3. HD Movies - Anyone here seen transformers on blu ray??? The quality of blu rays on a 1080p tv, I can't justify this you have to see for yourself :)

4. 7.1 surround sound- finally a reason to invest in audio equip

5. $$$- Blu ray players and drives are becoming much more affordable than ever and Hit movies like Iron man show how big movie releases are making blu ray catch on fast. Can't wait until Dark Knight, Which is already on pre order for many websites.

Thanks for reading, if you still don't like blu ray enjoy watching those ancient dvds and gimped games.

Blue-Ray is indeed good.

This deserves a thread......?

You are on tech website and you are quoting information that would have been known to most members close to 3 years ago.

Comcast compresses the shit out of most of my HD programming.

I've seen spiderman 3 on bluray and compared it to my 1080i HD programming. It had more detail. You can justify it, by saying it has higher detail, you just choose not to. :P

But you forget to mention it's slower read time hinders developers...

It's the particular drive in the PS3, read times available in certain blu-ray drives are higher than DVD read times. Unfortunately the fastest/cheapest drive available at launch was only 2X. I am surprised Sony hasn't upgraded the drive, perhaps if they launch a PS3 Slim they will put in a faster drive, it'd be a great incentive for many to upgrade.

@Diablo

Do you own a Blu-ray player? What movie is it you've seen? What was the TV? I can gaurantee that anyone that doesn't see a "noticeable" difference between DVD and Blu-ray is biased against Blu-ray for whatever reason.

Comcast sucks donkey. I have dish network, awesome HD programming(on some channels).

Yeah, I live in an apartment so if I get dish I have to get home insurance.  I really don't want to pay for home insurance.
