Most people I know buy movie and TV show based games like Star Wars: Episode One and American Chopper and games with recognizable characters like Sonic Heroes. They do not check reviews and are content with playing what I would call garbage every time they turn their game systems on.

That's probably why only 10% of 360 games get 90%+, as opposed to half of them..................................... (the statistics in this joke comment are not factual and should not be taken as such...)
Anyway, I'm going to say marketing (or lack of), macho nature of gamers (ewww okami looks so queer) and that some games are too out there for their own good (I'm going to use okami again).
Also the fact that 99% of gaming products don't have the names "NINTENDO" or "WII" attached to them.
I'm sure "Wii Okami" would've sold alot more than just "Okami".
because hardcore gamers =/= mainstream gamers.
movies get coverage/ads/reviews on tv news programss/newspapers/internet/word of mouth/billboards/magazines.
games get internet review and ads/tv ads/word of mouth.
...once video game reviews become more of mainstream (i.e tv news programs/newspapers and magazines that aren't dedicated to video games) the larger audience will pay more attention. as it stands the only mainstream attention games get is when they misbehave (i.e. GTA) or are call "wii something".
I'll get bioshock when you can get it at a decent price.

Most of the well reviewed games that didn't sell well are on the wii btw...
Metroid Prime 3 (I know it sold over a million but this is metroid we're talking about here, same league as Zelda and Donkey Kong)

for the same reason that games like Mario Party 8 are selling 5 million even the review says the score is 5.0!!
also, reviews suck, we don't even know if they played the game for hours or some minutes!!
user reviews count more than stupid IGN reviews....
non-popular games get bad scores, even if they are good....
