What franchises sold most in the 6th gen is something that people on VGChartz have had some tremendous mistakes about. I was in a thread where people claimed that GT was the best selling franchise, and some people even claimed it was Halo!

Do you know which sold better in the 6th gen? Mario or Grand Theft Auto? What was the best selling racer? Personally, I was wrong on both.

So, a thread listing the best sellers. As the games database still doesn't have a total of the sales of games that matched your search, I'm using million sellers only.

I count all games that have its name in the title (Mario and Sonic at the Olympicswould have been counted for both). Mario would not count in Smash Bros.

Also be aware that there may be some mistakes in the numbers, so if you bother, feel free to correct my mistakes.

He had Mario & Luigi on GBA too. I listed it for the sole reason that it's kinda fun that he sold 10% of Mario.

Is anyone else shocked at Need For Speed beating GT for best selling racer?

Star Wars at 6th was also a tremendous surprise for me.

Yeah, I was pretty shocked at NFS beating GT. Star Wars seems to have hit a lot bigger than I thought.

Spidey wasn't a surprise to me though, he had like 4 main console games last gen and Spider-Man 2 was a big hit, great game.

I can't say I'm surprised about this, but I will say that it's too bad Metroid doesn't place. I know that the Metroid-games didn't amount to all that strong sales, but they sure deserve it.

Well, Metroid didn't sell that bad. As a franchise, it ended 500K behind Zelda last gen on GC.

That reminds me! I forgot Zelda.

How about average? Only GTA have sold better then Gran Turismo per game.

You might not have complete data on Zelda or Metroid because there's no data on Zero Mission or Four Swords Adventure. Good luck though.

GT2:   9.37 million

GT3: 14.89 million

GT4: 10.18 million ( and its still selling so by the time GT5 is released it will pass 11 million)

Total: 45.29 million!

So average is 11.32 million!
