Forums - General Discussion - OMG... the Economist endorses Obama.

Well, the families in California seem to be voting for Obama, so why don't you explain that to them!  You can't rape the willing.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

I have the most epic death scene ever in VGChartz Mafia.  Thanks WordsofWisdom!

Akuma, Californians are fucking stupid.

I say this as a longtime Californian who loves the state. Rational thought and California do not belong in the same sentence. Love the state. It's full of batshit crazy bastards.

Or check out my new webcomic: http://selfcentent.com/

I speak for all of California when I say that we are the most rational and intelligent people in the history of the world.

As you were, gentlemen.

From the Land of the Penis (Florida), I say: "California is the land of Fruits and Nuts."

Rubang gets so mad when I say that.

...

Wait, this is the Economist thread?

BTW, nobody who makes 250k a year has to struggle... unless they are living beyond their means... then why should I feel bad for them?

This year, (remember I gave myself a demotion) I will probably make less than $20k. I have a two bedroom apartment by myself, a $400 car payment for a new car I bought 2 years ago, and all the other normal bills. I have no problems paying my bills. (though I spent a little too much last night on Halloween stuff... by stuff I mean alcohol.)

I could probably swing a kid into my budget, it would kill my ability to save but they would eat and have clothes and health care.

Okay on to the point. What is all this I hear about people making $250k struggling. What bizzaro world is this. If my ex can live in SoCal on $11/hour, why can't they make it on $120/hour?

I'm not going on the tax argument here. I'm just saying, if you really know anyone on that income who is struggling, suggest counseling. There is nothing healthy about BLOWing that much money.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

It's not about the money, it's about there liberties. Basically, you feel they don't need all that money, so it's OK to take it from them.

That should be illegal in this country.

Taxing the rich more to pay a larger percentage of the bills is ok, taxing then just because people think the poor should get some of it, isn't.

Don't worry, the money will probably go to Iraq before it actually goes to the poor.  We spend way more on Iraq than we do on the poor.

@ rocketpig: I agree that people in California are in no way representative of the rest of the country.  I was just using them as an example because Coca-cola was using them as an example of people who would be hurt.  It wasn't really a very good example when the people he was pointing to are voting for the guy promoting higher taxes.

I'll go with #1, and if some of the "bills" involve helping out people struggling to get by, so be it.

See that bolded part.  Ok...

Responding to your post:  Graduated taxes are not there because they can pay more.  Graduated taxes are there because wealthy people gain more from a stable government.  If you're poor, you'll be poor no matter what (even if the gov't pays for your healthcare or cuts a welfare check).  If you're rich then you have more to gain by keeping the gov't afloat and the masses pacified.

I really do not see what is so complicated.

Why do we care so much about the poor again?

We live in a country where anyone can go to school, get a job, and be successful. Some people took that road (and trust me, it's a lot harder then not), and we don't seem to give a shit about them. Others decided College was just to much work (and don't go with the "cant afford it" bullshit. In some states you can live off of grant money from going to school).

Why again are we so worried about how those that don't take care of themselves live, and so little about the ones that did all the right things in there lives?

I want someone on this site who is poor and lives in the US, to explain to me why they had no other option to improve there income.

I get tired of worrying about those that did not worry about themselves. You want more money, go fucking earn it like the rest of us.
