Forums - PC - Getting back into Computer gaming

Nope not going cheap at all. I want a beast lol. I'm looking forward to 300 - 400 dollar parts on pretty much everything -_-.

Heres is the PSU

As for graphics cards im still trying to decide between a few of them. As of now three 8800 GTX. Whatever card it is im buying 3 of them. As i said earlier reason i got the motherboard was cause of the three way SLI. (and a few other things but that was the main factor)

If the 9800 GX2, or GTX 280 fall within the 300 range at the time im ready to buy (im also putting them off a little later)

Buying the tower, RAM, PSU, Heatsyncs, the OS (Vista) first since they're a little cheaper then the CPU and graphic cards and those have a chance of falling in price.

I liked your case, but I' am still looking around (i might get it :P) to me a case is important. I want something i wont get sick of looking at and get the <3 feeling. I think the one i chose is tooo small but im not sure. Any more suggestions?

The old PC games are still the best on the PC: Diablo 1&2, Star Craft and Counter Strike, War Craft 3 and World of War Craft.

I just purchased an Antec P182 because they look really nice and its extremely quiet. Also they are pretty nice to work in so it makes multiple upgrades/tweaks in the future a pleasant thought. Hasn't arrived yet so im sorry I can't give you my impressions.

They aren't cheap but they do a really good job at keeping the noise down. So thats a win for me.

You bought the P182? That's the case that I was going to get when I was building my system last year. I was looking at the P182 SE (the shiny chrome edition) That case is pretty big though and my place isn't that large, so I ended up going with the Antec Sonata III 500 mid-tower case instead. (http://www.antec.com/usa/productDetails.php?id=15137&lan=us ) Plus it came with a decent Antec PSU as well, so it also saved me some money.

If you don't know what kind of monitor you're getting right now and due to the fact there are often excellent deals on Case/PSU combos I suggest you purcase your HDDs, Optical drives, CPU fan etc this week and at the same time look for the monitor you want to drive. The monitor dictates your GPU requirements which dictates your Case/PSU/CPU requirements.

If you run a larger 1080P LCD TV you won't need as strong GPUs but if you run something like a 30" 2560/1600 resolution monitor you'll see the kind of scaling which justifies buying a high end SLI setup.

Im going high end next year when the Direct X 11 class or at least 40nm GPUs are released so I needed an Antec P182.

Since you only have one smallish monitor you might want to set yourself up for just dual SLI. So if you want it, that means that you just need 2x 6 pin + 2x 8 pin to be able to run two of the biggest cards. No point in going Tri SLI.

If you're looking for top of the range, here are the 4 top cards.

HD 4870 512/1gb
HD 4870 X2 2gb

The above are quick but the 4870 won't SLI and the 4870 X2 doesn't need to as it already is two GPUs on a card.

Advantage - Direct X 10.1 - Forward compatible with Windows 7, Runs anti aliasing better than the Nvidia cards.

GTX 260 - 192
GTX 260 - 216
GTX 280 - 240

Advantage - Can SLI, also can do a whole bunch of potentially interesting things in the future like SLI and accellerate your photoshop programs etc. Also can be found with a deep discount and they come with Far Cry 2 at the mommen.

My suggestion is that any one of these cards will be more than fast enough for your monitor size so just select the best balance between price/features. The Nvidia ones have a deep discount/MIR so they may be better value for you.

ATI cards have Crossfire, it's like SLI, of course the 4870 can't SLI....

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

@ Ben, I was trying to keep it simple.
