1. SNES, with PS2 a close but DEFINITE second place. PS1 takes third. FF4, FF5 (JSNES still counts!), FF6, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, Super Mario RPG, Secret of Mana > FF12, Odin Sphere, Xenosaga 1, 2, 3, Kingdom Hearts 1, 2, Suikoden 3, 4, 5
2. DS is no doubt whupping the PSP in this category, although there are nice contenders on that system and there is something to be said for the PSP's superior cinematic capabilities.
3. (A) The ones that do get made for the PC just don't get ported to this side of the Pacific, methinks.
(B) Part of the reason that consoles get more RPGs is partly historical, I believe.
--(1) PCs used to be way expensive with a small home userbase, and most of THOSE didn't go out and get lots of games for it. Game consoles were cheap and everybody who had one was buying games for it.
--(2) Square, Enix, etc. These companies were the GODS of JRPGs. There is only so much market for these games, and most of it was focused on the consoles. Too bad so sad for PC owners.
--(3) The big advantage of PCs has NOT been graphics until very recently; it has been networking. PCs were the only place to go for multiplayer [edit: as opposed to two-player] -- the N64 in 1996 was the first major console to even have four controller ports! Meanwhile, on a PC, you could play DOOM against all the idiots on campus; later, you could play Counterstrike against all the morons on the Internets. RPGs are a one man show; no need for a game machine with networking capability.
[edit: With the exception of MMORPGs, in which case -- surprise, surprise! -- PCs reign supreme.]
ANYWAY:
4. I think it's a toss-up between the Wii -- most creative gameplay possibilities -- and the PS3 -- most capability for cinematic experiences.
Why not PC? (A) I hope you concede that the Wii offers the POSSIBILITY for the most natural control scheme experience.
(B) The PS3 has more to offer in the way of cinematic capability because
--(1) TEH BLOO RAIE -- to demand all PC owners to run out and get Blu-ray drives is unacceptable, so the PC RPG maker is constrained for at least the next few years to putting games on the more size-restricted DVD format. All this = less cinematics.
--(2) Most PC owners do not have a monitor anywhere near the size of their TV screen, with the exception of those lucky bastards whose monitors ARE their TV screens. Smaller screen = less cinematic experience.
Why not the 360? RRoD = less cinematic experience LOLOLOLOLO but seriously, the PS3 is more powerful and capable of producing more and better graphics, AND it has free online play.
