Wrong. I play Halo 3 online without a harddrive all the time.

The only thing you can't do without the harddrive really is to download demos of games. That's literally it.

How limiting is this though? I thought most of the playlists required the Heroic maps (free) which are too big to fit on a memory card.

Forgive me that I don't know off hand which playlists require which

Online co-op requires the HD I'm almost certain.

Online coop does not need harddrive.

I don't know about playlists and maps but I know I can play anything that's on the disc online just like everybody else.
