Fortunately, on Windows or Linux, I can go out and get every single one of those types of applications free of charge from any creator/vendor I choose.  I don't have to get the blessing of Steve Jobs before I run something on my PC, and I certainly am not restricted to a small list of things that have been deemed acceptable by him.  I can go to Download.com, find the best rated choice for my specific need, and I'm off to the races.  BTW, OpenOffice is a perfectly acceptable alternative to MS office, and it's 100% free.

Sorry, have to add this:  Windows gets ripped on CONSTANTLY for all the preinstalled stuff.  In fact, they're talking about taking it all out for Windows 7 and just having you download the things you specifically need.  This is actually a move I do NOT support, but most MS critics do.

Do people at least get warned for stating lies?

Anyone can create any application for Mac OS X. There's truckloads of them, both commercial and open source or freeware. I'm using QuickSilver, Adium, Amsn, OpenOffice, Handbrake, ffmpegx, jaikoz, VLC, etc... all excellent freeware software that was made on this open platform called Mac OS X.

I've been using windows back since the days you booted into DOS and had to execute windows for the GUI to pop up and I can tell you macs are better as far as stability goes. Which is no surprise since Mac OS X is nothing but a UNIX-like OS, much like Linux is.

It appears that the only reality distortion field is the one you create yourself to protect you from the harsh reality: windows blows and you shouldn't be using it unless there are critical apps you need not available on alternative, more robust, operating systems like Linux or Mac OS X.

Oh, you mean I shouldn't have been using Windows this whole TIME???????!!!!!!!!!!!  Why didn't you say something earlier?  If you knew what the best OS was for me, you should have told me before!!  I feel like such a chump now!!!!!!

I hate to tell you, but Mac OS is far far far from an open platform.  I find it hilarious that you think that.  It's proprietary just like Windows.  And all the music and graphics software that is supposedly "better" on OSX according to Steve Jobs and his army of morons, is actually quite crippled and stripped down compared to some of the programs that are available on Windows (some of them are ONLY available on Windows).  Garage band is absolute garbage compared to some of the stuff that's out there now, but nobody wants to hear that.  Because.....well......because it's Garage Band!!!  The ultimate software for creating and editing music!!!!!  (Far from it.)  Yes, people write all kinds of software for Mac OS, but there just aren't as many options out there for it, and god forbid if Steve Jobs catches wind of something that's not OSX-like enough.

Mac OSX is more robust and stable you say?  I can tell you right now that despite some of the GUI changes that people hate about Windows Vista, I have had extremely good stability from it, much more so than I got from XP or 2000.  Because I'm a gamer, I felt the need to reinstall XP about once a year.  It would just get sluggish and things would just stop working the way I wanted them to.  I have had Vista installed since launch, and after all the driver issues got worked out, I haven't had one issue with it and I STILL don't feel any need at all to reinstall it.  It's just as snappy and responsive as it was the day I installed it and it's been solid as a rock, even pre-SP1.  I'm not saying everyone has had the same experience, but I am saying that you have absolutely no right to tell me that I should not be using Windows since it "blows".

And as far as security, it's much easier to hack into a Mac system than a Windows system these days.  You're not impervious to crapware and hackers just because you using a fucking Mac and if you think you, you're an absolute moron.

Meh I don't hate windows.

If people want to try Linux they should get Ubuntu and use the install inside windows option. This saves any formatting and drive prep.

Even better, just use the LiveCD and try it out without installing anything at all.

So, you're comparing Garage Band to some unnamed software that is available only on Windows, stating that Garage Band is garbage. That's a good argument, really good. Who has ever claimed that Garage Band is "The ultimate software for creating and editing music!!!!!" ??? It's part of the iLife suite for crying out loud, it's an amateur program. And I'd like you to show me a program on Windows that does the same as Garage Band as easily anyway. You need to face the facts: pro audio production is 90% done on macs (and no, I don't have a research source to back this up, just some inside industry information). I'd hazard a guess that professional graphic design is also predominantly done on Macs.

Also, about the openness of the platform, can you state any examples of Mac programs that Steve Jobs or Apple has somehow disallowed? I don't think you can, but I'd be curious to know anyway. I stated in my earlier post that from a developer standpoint, OS X is in some ways more open a platform than Windows, care to comment on that? And what about the open source components used in OS X, and Apple's contributions to the open source community? Can you state any examples of MS doing the same? Bring in facts and proof, not just your own claims.

Securitywise Vista does seems to be a big improvement over XP, and that's a huge plus for MS. But on a practical level, Mac users don't have to worry nearly as much as Windows users. Like it or not, security through obscurity works.

@ Domicinator & Plaupuis

Plaupuis is right, anyone can develop software for Mac. I at least know that Macintosh runs java, and even I can make a program that will run in java.

Domicinator is right in the aspect that Mac OSX is not impervious to viruses. I once again note that Mac OSX runs java, which always has security holes they are patching. However, Mac OSX is more secure 1) because it does not use extensions to tell the operating system how to run programs and 2) because of the lower user base, virus makers don't bother half the time. There are probably other reasons, but I don't know them.

As to Vista being a good OS, go do a little research. theinquirer.org recently published an article about Windows Vista being like Windows ME. I don't know if Vista is that bad, but the fact that people are comparing it to ME is not a good sign. Microsoft themselves admit that Vista wasn't up to par. The keep pushing back the deadline for "no more XP" and keep pushing forward the deadline for Windows 7 (which is basically a reworked Vista)

Look at my occupation under my profile.

You are stating that the computer version of MAC OSX can't run software Apple doesn't want them to run. You've stated it twice. Well on your next reply I want to see from you hard proof of that or I'm reporting you on the grounds that you are purposedly stating and repeating lies just to slander something.

Open-ness? Did you know that the KERNEL (do you even know what it is?) of Mac OS X is free, open-source software? Are you aware that the building block of browsers like Nokia's for its S60 smartphones or Google Chrome or the browser in the Google Android phones is called WebKit and Apple has largely contributed to that open-source project? In fact it's the work Apple put into it to prop it up to power Safari is what allowed those companies to easily integrate it into their products (mostly competing against Apple's own!). Heck, let's talk about DirectX vs OpenGL... one is an open standard the other is propietary, up to you to guess which one is used on windows and which one on Mac OS X.

Your next post better include reasonable and sensible answers to these issues. Oh and please let us know also why you hate Apple wich such fierce rage.

The only problem with that is it doesn't let you save your settings when you exit. But it is a good way to get an initial feel to see if you want to take it further.

Domicinator didn't slander anyone.

Slander is spoken. In print it's libel.

Now someone hates me for being a smart***.  I know it
