Forums - Gaming - My thoughts on Dead Space

As some may have noticed, I was absent from this site for the better part of three days. I was absent for good reason, however, as I spent the better part of those three days playing Dead Space. These are my thoughts upon completing the game:

I have heard protestations from fellow gamers that the story is plagiarized from the Halo games, and I disagree with those assertions. Let me assure you that, although there are subtle similarities between certain elements of Halo’s story and Dead Space’s story, the respective stories are markedly different.

The exclusion of a HUD is done seamlessly. The health bar and the ammo count do not litter the screen, and the inventory menu is a holographic display that does not interrupt the flow of the game. The game does not pause when you access your inventory, and I enjoyed that. The weapons and combat are fairly unique. The pulse rifle and the flamethrower are the only standard weapons in the game. The two weapons I used the most, the “line gun” and the “plasma cutter,” are actually mining tools. They shoot lines of ionized gas (plasma) that were originally meant to carve rock. The “ripper” is a remote-controlled circular saw that can also fires saw disc projectiles. The combat is also refreshingly unique. No longer is it simply point at the enemy and blast away. No, in Dead Space you must use strategy. This usually involves shooting at the legs and arms so the creature is no longer mobile. Shooting at the head and chest cavity is ineffective and a waste of ammo.

As there are many high-profile games releasing in the near-future, I understand that it may not be feasible to purchase this game. I do, however, implore all of you to at least rent this game.

Purchased it on Wednesday. I am only 4 hours into it, but I am loving it!

I love the weapons and combat. Shooting lines of plasma to dismember the necromorphes was...well, very satisfying.

wait, wa? How is this game like Halo in story? I missed that. I played the first chapter in my friends house, its pretty cool and the ambience is pretty scary. LOL we were playing in the dark and even though he had like a 27 inch SDTV and no surround sound, it was still kind of creepy and like something was going to pop out and BAM I jumped when his dog ran by my foot....good times. So yea I digress, how is this game like Halo?

I'm glad to hear this game is good. I'll try the demo when I get my 360 back.......

I do not wish to spoil the story for anyone, but I know some people have linked the necromorphes and the flood from Halo. As I said in my original post, the similarities are subtle and the stories are markedly different.

I have it, but I did not intend to buy it. I was planning to exchange it for something else, but all these threads are making me want to open it...

Should I??

This is great to hear. Ive been waiting for a gamer and not a reviewer to weigh in on the game. It will be on my PC as soon as it comes out in 2 days. Which makes me wonder why they delayed the PC version by 6 days, hopefully it's to polish up the controls or something for the PC and not just a timed exclusive sort of deal. Any word on that?

Well, the game was originally going to release on the 20th across all platforms, but a month or two ago they decided to release the PS3 and 360 versions earlier. I am not certain as to why they did that.

^^Yes, I would open it.

Yeah I remember that, I'm just hoping they make it a good PC game as well.
