Blu Ray is not doing well here in Southern England

Local Supermarket(4) started selling Blu last year(3) and gave a 2m x 3m wall to the product along with a cardboard cut out announcing Blu Ray and explaining it via leaflets.

I have watched the space slowly get taken over by the Wii and its peripherals and now its just a single row 1m long. Seriously they only have like 5 Blu Ray films on offer at any given time.

Not surprising when Sex and The City (one of the Blu Ray films on offer) is right next to its DVD couterpart.

Blu Ray 19.99 GBP
DVD 11.99 GBP(1)

No one in their right minds is going to pay almost twice as much for the Blu Ray.(2)

Are They ?

First:

11.99 x 2 = 23.98 - 19.99 = 3.99

Second:

Blu-ray Market Share in US up to 13% Over Previous Week

Third:

Last year was when it was Blu-ray vs HD-DVD of course you are going to make it IN YOUR FACE then.

Fourth:

Your local store does not represent the entire world.

First - I did say almost twice. Would you prefer close to double or signifigantly more than ?

Second - I was talking Anecdotally about my local Supermarket in BUCKS not the US

Third - I was merely making a point about the encroachment of the Wii into Blu Ray sales space

Fourth - I never claimed it did, nor would I.

I was only making the point as at least in my local supermarket the Blu Ray domination appears to be in full scale retreat.

There could be a multitude of reasons for this, low sales, future move to another area of store, the list would be infinite.

It wasnt an attack it was an observation.

You do realize your first post started out with "Blu Ray is not doing well here in Southern England"

Seems to me like an obvious case of generalization using one store to represent a whole region. Don't be a sour loser just because someone caught your mistakes.

I think this story explains the problem with Blu-ray at the moment...the average person doesnt know the difference in quality and probably doesnt think its worth the extra cash

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

Okay, Here in Bolingbrook IL, my local Bestbuy now has 5 movie shelves (4-5 rows each shelf)... compared to when hd-dvd was still around when it had 2 and HD-dvd had 1.

Blu Ray goes up a ton every time there is a big action movie release. In fact in many cases the Blu Ray version seems to do either about the same or better then the DVD version. Iron Man is a great example of this, Dark Knight will be as well (and Transformers would have been if they were released at the same time).

Really big budget action movies are the ones worth getting on Blu Ray most of all. Sure its nice to have some extra features or better picture quality on a Drama or a Comedy, but action blockbusters are where the attention to detail and sound really shine with Blu Ray.

If you are looking at ALL movies, Blu Ray will take a while to overtake DVD, but in terms of big budget event movies I bet from early 09 at the latest and on Blu Ray will outsell DVD if it doesn't already. As to Blu Ray selling the most OVERALL it may take longer, but it certainly is worth the time even now.

I know I would never have bought Iron Man on DVD. With DVDs I just started buying them a few months after release for 5-10 dollars at Blockbuster (used). They were just a commodity item with low percieved value. Blu Rays, starting with Casino Royale (the first REALLY great Blu Ray movie) have become a 1st week purchase for me on action movies I really like.

Also as to the cost, many big releases are offered with special pricing by big retailers like Frys and Amazon soon after release. I was able to get Iron Man for 24.99 from Amazon, ditto for most other Blu Rays I have bought. Some are even better deals such as the original Rambo (easily one of the 5 best action movies of all time) for 12.99 at Frys. I got Mad Men for just under 30 bucks too for the entire 1st season.

Some vendors do make the effort to make Blu Ray a good value, some don't. I have a personal top price of 25 bucks for a movie after which I just won't buy it, I think that is more or less the norm which is why the prices have gone down to that level (not in retail prices but in the actual asking price at retailers) and not surprisingly sales have gone up. When all Blu Rays are 25 and down and players are 199 or less we will really see the format take off.

The Incredible Hulk will also boost bluray sales now.

It's the no.1 seller already many places in Europe.

Tell me about it...

Iron Man was sold out at my Best Buy so I had to buy it at Wall Mart. cost me 5$ more..

Best Buy does 5$ of new releases of Blue Ray and DVD movies the first week. Wall Mart only does that on DVDs....

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

it's true that they are more front loaded and that movies like iron man will sell proportionally better than other movies on blu-ray, but even then it's still not even close.  7.2 million on dvd and 500k on blu-ray first week.  You see what i mean?  Even on the first week of a big budget action title like this it only took 14% sales, and as the weeks go on DVD will take a higher percentage of sales.  Blu-ray sales went up 145% this week while DVD sales went up 21% and this only includes the top 20.  That number tells me that iron man makes up more than half of the top 20 sales for blu-ray while the rest of the top 20 for DVD takes up a much higher percentage.
I'm not saying anything about the future of blu-ray here, but I think too many people have the wrong perception of blu-ray sales right now.
