Forums - Gaming - Is Sony done for?

The weekly sales for the 360 are dropping and Sony haven't even responded yet, the price cuts may not be effective in the long run. BTW, I noticed the FUD against the PS3 is really in overdrive now, it must be related to the PS3 receiving two high profile exclusive titles in the next three weeks.

Oh the irony, this reminds me of 2007, were people thought sony would discontinue the ps3.

Exactly,  Was it last year that we got NPD numbers where X360 sold 5 times more than PS3?...Everyone was like it is over for PS3!   After some months the PS3 was selling more than X360 and it was very quite....Now MS manage to sell more X360's than PS3's....And bam...Sony is done for again..

what like the constent xbox 360 has peaked and its done for thread, since january. i dont think its the end for either, but it does mean that the ps3 wont over run the 360 next year, beyond that whos to say

Worldwide the X360 sold less than they did last year in the first 8 months of the year and I think that is a good reason to say the X360 sales have peaked and looks to die.  It something sells less than it did a year before most people will conclude that it is not that popular anymore.  (Not that I think it is going to die soon).

While PS3 sales are a lot better WW compared to last year it is just a matter of wait and see what it will do next year.

your wrong, through 8 months last year it was 8086479 to 11173832 wich is 3087345. this year 16044623 to 20476409 which is 4431786  which shows improvment over last year and we arnt even including a price cut in this. do research before you post, oh and also last year there would be one month of price cut, where as 08s price cut took place latter, so this makes it look lie your point is even more bullshit

 It is VGCHARTZ fault!  Why are monthly chartz only from America X_X;

i used the weekly markers for world chart  on vg chartz, and subtract it. the 360 most likly will peak in 2010-11 and the ps3 2011-2012

the 360 was up this week in america, japan, as ms apoligized for is still supply constrained, europe its a crap shoot next week will eb interesting. also 1 month is pretty good for a price cut, i think we have a new american nonholiday average until sonys next cut most likly in march next year, and as for the ps3 fud, its more a response to the ps3 boy whooping it up hjow the 36o was done for for the last 6 months, aka backlash, all to do wit sales, and what exclusives did it git i didnt notice any new, the two i have been eyeing white night, and valkery chronicals are both old, though after another ps3 price drop, and another year so they are cheap games i might pick up a ps3, ipicked up a ps2 for some koei games back in the day

The PS3 will continue to do moderately well, but as with the 360, expect sales to start to taper off at a certain point. Sony has crippled any possible market for the PS4's success so while the PS3 may tread water, I don't see much of a promising future for its successor.

Remember, the PS3 is only doing as well as it is largely due to the momentum of the PS2 behind it. A momentum the Ps3 has brought to a dead stop.

I know you are a big Sony fan. Same as me. You just wanted to hear arguments about what strength Sony has. Well Sony is nowhere near any kind of danger. IMO the biggest strength that Sony has: Brand new IPs -> Resistance, Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, LBP, Siren:BC, White Knight, Infamous, DC Universe, MAG, Killzone. This adds to already established IPs from previous gen: God of war, Ratchet and surely many more that I forget now. All these games mean series of sequels that can only be played on the PS platform. Hell, I didn't even mention the 3rd party exclusives that u will get on the PS3. If you look at the sales gap right now, its not that much even though the price gap is big. All that sony needs to smash M$ is a strategic price cut. They might not even go for that, just prefer to maintain profitability while bleeding M$

ms is not bleeding, sony still is on its current modle, they have stated when they will stop losing money on hardware, january 09 so there is the reason you wont see a price cut in sony land untill 09 most likly march, and ms will cut the price again in october with the yearly cut, nothing shocking there, sony should win world wide until the 360 cut, and after it the 360 should win for a bit, then it depends on momentum and games. (i expect ms to end the arcade next year and move the pro to 199, or give the arcade an hd and a moderate cut say 20 bucks (other scews50 dollar), i expect sony next year to drop by 100 dollars, as its current price point will be tapped out by then).

what is eveident right now is there is no way the 360 will be overtaken by the ps3 in 2009, after both of next years sales cuts, we can make guesses as to if it will happen in 2010

Could someone please tell me what's the real issue here because I don't see how SONY is done for in regards to the PS3. Here's what I'm looking at: third party's are still developing for the PS3, third parties are getting a better handle on PS3 development, more third parties are using the PS3 as a lead platform, there is still a steady demand for the PS3, the PS3 still has its fair share and newly announced exclusives, and SONY is still stronly pushing first/second party develpment. Let's assume foreseeable worse case scenario that the PS3 remains in third. Can someone reasonably tell me why third parties will stop developing for the PS3, making it a less viable option given the facts I just mentioned? And for anyone (like Onimusha) to think that the PS3 willl be harmful to the PS4's success is being hypocritical by not counting the fact that Nintendo came back on top from the past two gens.

I think gaming as we know it is done for, the HD consoles are really not selling the way they should be and all people really care about now is how much your console has sold, graphics, and the Wii.

Sony is trying to keep it real by giving gamers what they have been giving them for the past 16 years, Microsoft realizes that there is success in what Sony has been doing for 2 generations and decided to capitalize on it by beating Sony to the market first, and Nintendo said to hell with the mainstream let’s make this fun for everyone.

So here we are today, and I can guarantee that by the end of this gen the total units sold will be far less than what was sold last gen, which means the market is shrinking. Sony just needs a price cut and by law they have to turn a profit, which currently is their main focus, their 10 years plan puts them in a league of their own much like Nintendo did with the Wii.

The Wii is on track to passing the PS2, and the PS3/360 will pass the old 2nd/3rd place consoles within next year. How do you suspect that number will end up shrinking? (Let me guess: Wii sales plummeting?)

@Jordahn: Nintendo completely changed their public image for the Wii / DS, which is one reason why it became so successful. He's only saying another Playstation will have a much harder time, not just any new console Sony puts out. If the Wii was called "Gamecube 2," I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have worked out that well.
