Half-Life house Valve Software is counting on a horde of living dead and tight co-op play to rake in the cash this holiday season with the horror shooter Left 4 Dead.

But the studio is trying to leave as little to chance as possible, as the firm told Edge exclusively on Thursday it will be spending $10 million (£5.9m) on a consumer campaign that will incorporate, television, online, print and outdoor advertising across the country. The game is slated to ship on November 17 on Xbox 360 and PC.

"People had really strong reactions to Left 4 Dead when we started showing it," said Valve managing director Gabe Newell in an interview. "Our pre-orders are running 60 percent ahead of Orange Box. This in combination with the fact that it is a new IP made us think that an extensive marketing program made a lot of sense."

That's pretty impressive. I really hope it pays off for them. Ad campaign or not, they've got my sale!

Daaaamn, this game is gonna be huge. Getting it for 360 on release day.

Well I was sold from the get-go, as well as all my buddies. Hardest part is, do I get it for my Live buddies or for my PC buddies. Hmmmm....choices, choices.

PC is where it's at. X360 will play this game in slow motion compared to PC.

Damn, if this campaign are something similar to the Gears of War and Halo 3 ones, this will be huge :P

This is significant because Valve doesn't typically advertise their games much compared to other developers. Orange Box they did a little, but this is a big step up. I believe Halo 3's campaign cost $10 million as well.

Valve's games have always sold really well without advertising, I don't see the need for one even now. Definitely a first day download from Steam for me. We even have the whole crew set up here. All 4 get in 1 room, move the PCs, and start shooting some zombies. It will be GLORIOUS!
