Forums - Nintendo - Prediction: Wii will hit 17-18 million consoles sold by year's end

Desroko said:

Nintendo released a report stating that they will have sold to retail 22.5m consoles by April 2008. Since sold to retail is almost the same thing as sold to consumer for the Wii, you're essentially predicting  that they will move only 5m more in the next five months, and around 8m in the three months after.

First, link the report.

Second, LIKE I SAID, I'd love to be wrong about this, but unless they whip up some more factories in a huge hurry, their current monthly sales trends do not indicate that this will be the case.

Doesn't anyone else remember when Nintendo insisted they'd have 4 million Wiis on shelves by the end of 2006 and they fell short by a million units?

"I mean, c'mon, Viva Pinata, a game with massive marketing, didn't sell worth a damn to the "sophisticated" 360 audience, despite near-universal praise--is that a sign that 360 owners are a bunch of casual ignoramuses that can't get their heads around a 'gardening' sim? Of course not. So let's please stop trying to micro-analyze one game out of hundreds and using it as the poster child for why good, non-1st party, games can't sell on Wii. (Everyone frequenting this site knows this is nonsense, and yet some of you just can't let it go because it's the only scab you have left to pick at after all your other "Wii will phail1!!1" straw men arguments have been put to the torch.)" - exindguy on Boom Blocks

Which is understandable, given the rush of a launch. It's going to be a year later, however, and the difference that you projecting is much larger than 1 million - more like 4 million.

You can continue to insist that you know Nintendo's production situation better than they do. You can predict that they are going to miss their shipment targets by 4 million. I can only hope you come back in January for the Crow thread.

Arrogant like a prima donna, aren't you?

First of all, when did I say that I "know their production situation better than they do"? Quote me where I said that, please.

Second, ALL I AM SAYING, once again, is that while I hope these are indeed the numbers they pull off, I'm taking a wait and see approach because Nintendo has missed their target numbers in the past.

Doesn't anyone remember all the articles around June/July 2006 which suggested that Wii production had already started and that they'd have ample supplies of units come launch?

I'm not entering the sales figure pissing contest that this site loves so much. I'm just saying that I wouldn't be optimistic, especially when Nintendo has ALSO warned us that Wiis will be hard to find for xmas again this year.

LOL. "Arrogant?" Aren't you the guy who derided the rest of us for pretending to be analysts, and then proceeded to demonstrate your own, obviously far superior ability at analysis?

You say you're not going to enter a "sales pissing match" that the rest of us love so much, despite the fact that you already concluded that they can do "14-15, but that's about it."

Someone mocked my post. I fired back. Sue me.

You're the one who came out shaking your fist with threats of "You're gonna eat crow!!!"

And I didn't predict anything: I merely pointed out what the numbers of Wii sales will be by the end of the year if they continue at their current rate. I didn't "predict" anything a calculator wouldn't have told you.

Yes, Nintendo has said they'll be increasing production, but they've also said Wiis will be hard to find, and they've ALSO made number predictions in the past and missed them.

I threw out a loose prediction since it was the focus of the thread and I was insulted for it. I fired back. Sue me. You're the one who came out shaking your fist with threats of "You're gonna eat crow!!!"

I'll wait for you to get your story straight.

Yeah, I edited it before you posted when I realized it was an incorrect choice of words.

I doubt the Wii will break 12 mil because Nintendo can't even produce them fast enough.

This one's my favorite.
