Forums - Gaming - Top 10 Best Controllers of All Time

360 controller #1? Is this a joke? The D-pad alone is enough to drop it out of the top 10. Also the RB guitar is far better than the GH. No mention of the Wii controllers.

My personal top 10.

I was in a creative mood so I decided to put some effort into this list.

10 - Nintendo Entertainment System

Pros - Very simple big buttons, looks sweet :p

Cons - Edges not comfertable, D-pad kills thumbs.

9 - Guitar Hero

Pros - Most immersive controller ever, very comfertable, responsive buttons.

Cons - Expensive, only works for Guitar Hero (duh)

8 - Nintendo Wii Classic Controller

Pros - Comfertable for extended play, plenty of buttons for all retro consoles.

Cons - Feels cheap compared to other 1st part controllers, joysticks too close together.

7 - Game Boy Advance

Pros - Very comfertable for long play times.

Cons - Small D-Pad, not enough buttons.

6 - Nintendo 64

Pros - More then enough buttons, comfertable for long play sessions.

Cons - Joystick kills thumbs, D-pad never used, tiny C buttons.

5 - Super Nintendo Entertainment System

Pros - Amazing D-pad for extended play, comfertable buttons.

Cons - Very thin compared to other era controllers, prone to yellowing...(mine at least)

4 - Microsoft Xbox 360

Pros - Extremely comfertable for long play time, can be used with PC's.

Cons - Horride D-pad, bumpers feel 'clicky'

3 - Nintendo Wii Remote and Nunchuck

Pros - Motion controls, very comfertable for long playthroughs.

Cons - Runs on AA batteries, not enough buttons, 1-2 hard to reach.

2 - Nintendo Virtual Boy

Pros - Extremly comfertable controller, all buttons feel perfect, only good thing about Virtual Boy.

Cons - Battery pack is on the controller and heavy, 2nd D-pad is rarely used.

1 - Nintendo Gamecube

Pros - Amazingly comfertable can play for hours on end, L and R buttons feel good. The Perfect Controller.

Cons - C-Stick can slip under your thumb, odd Z trigger placement.

yes someone else who loved the virtualboy controller... if only it had been remade with analog sticks... the second dpad was so lefties, and righties could use it

What a stupid list. Especially when the Dualshock 3 is everything that the Dualshock 2 is, except wireless. How can they put the Dualshock 2 over the Dualshock 3? And The d-pad, as others said, automatically disqualifies the XBox360 controller from being number 1, let alone in the top 3 or 4. Very comfortable controller though.

Personally I like the Dualshock 3 the best. I've gotten used to the wider range of motion for the analog sticks as well as the spongy triggers. Unlike the XBox360 gamepad, every aspect of the Dualshock 3 is usable. The d-pad for the XBox360 is basically unusable for games which require a good d-pad. Anyone who says otherwise needs to try to play Mortal Kombat with it.

The PS2 controller at only #8 and the 360's at #1?

fail

The Wii remote may not be the best controller, albeit is still really good not to mention very comfortable, it should have been on the list but IMO the super nintendo controller is the best one.

I am really surprised that NES Advantage would be on there but not NES. One was a throw back to earlier systems, the other defined controllers for the next 25 years.

I am not really surprised at the lack of pre-NES controllers, but I think they deserved to be. Atari is the controller that defined a generation, and the Intellivision's overlays were an innovation that made learning complex buttons easy.

I prefer having the analogue sticks symmetrical and i don't really feel the battery box on the back is nice with the xbox360, and i don't see how you can really compare old controllers with new ones.

What? ARe you kidding me? The RB guitar fails against the GHIII guitar in every single way. The buttons are much more clicky and less responsive. And they break more easily.. The strumbar is squishy and difficult to strum constantly. The entire guitar feels cheap and easily breakable.

In every way, the RB guitar is a failure.

Maybe it's cuz I've gotten use to the Dualshock, but thats my favorite. I love it.

^_^

I can only post my favourite of the ones I have used.

10. Original Nes pad. (paved the way of a decent d-pad. Much better than the Master System d-pad)

9. Atari Joystick. ( it was robust and precise for it's time. Better than Commodores version, which was easy to break.)

8. Original Playstation pad. (was more ergonomical than the snes pad. but the d-pad was only ok)

7. Snes Pad. (was very good in it's day, superb d-pad and had plenty of buttons.)

6. Dualshock 2+3. (although the wieght and cable features are different, they are essential the same apart from the very twitchy triggers on DS3. A pad I used for years, but the ergonomics made it hard for me as the sticks are so close and the pad feels tiny.)

5. PSP. (yes it's a handheld but very well done for the controls. Sony get thumbs up for this)

4. N64 pad. (the first pad to have rumble feature outside PC gaming pads. Also the first with analog. Loved this pad)

3. DS (the control scheme is perfect for a handheld, play Zelda on DS and you will understand>)

2. 360 pad. (fits your hand very ergonomically. Relaxing to use nither feels too big or to small. The d-pad does suck, but thankfully we do not live in an era where d-pad is for precision. I have used and done well with analogs for fighting games for over 5 years now.

1. Wiimote. (Love it or hate, it is revolutionary. After using it for FPS's it's not all it cracked up to be for that genre. I think I could beat anyone with analogs. However it's so diverse and changes the games we play. It can only get first place.)
