2010 i think will have a relatively strong first quarter, even from Nintendo themselves: Sin & Punishment 2, Heart Gold/Soul Silver, Endless Ocean 2, perhaps Span Smasher or Line Attack Heroes. Q2 will get Galaxy 2, Q3 i bet will be Other M, then Q4 will be stronger with Monado, Zelda, Wii Vitality, and the Retro Studios project.
Plus a few other, lesser projects.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.
2010 will be strong but not OMG best year ever! I'm doubting that we'll see Zelda, I think Nintendo will have a relatively weak Q4 in terms of system sellers with Pikmin 3, Wii Vitality and Retro's new title. Hopefully they have a surprise or two brewing, Nintendo still has EAD 1 (I think it's 1) completely free whichever team the Mario Kart team is.. Anyway, they haven't done anything for 2 years (Although I believe they did Wii Fit Plus - but only a small team would be needed for that).
I'm personally hoping for a new franchise from them, a bridge title like Mario Kart Wii or NSMBWii. That could very well be the big holiday game. Looking at the line-up for next year, I don't see Zelda even fitting in!
- Sin and Punishment 2
- Endless Ocean 2
- Span Smasher
- Line Attack Heroes
- Metroid: Other M
- Super Mario Galaxy
- Wii Vitality
- Retro Studios new title OR Zelda Wii
- EAD 1 new title
I can't see Zelda and Retro's title making it out in the same year. Not with Metroid and Galaxy 2 also releasing. Nintendo are NOT going to release their 4 biggest core titles in the same year. EAD 1 is the big mystery, Nintendo aren't going to release Mario Kart Wii 2, it makes no sense as anyone wanting Mario Kart Wii would have picked up a Wii already and they wouldn't have needed 2+ years on it.
I've said a few times before that I think that if Starfox has any chance of a release this generation, it'll be what EAD 1 is working on. However I don't think Nintendo would waste their EAD resources on a title that is as much a niche as Starfox. Pilotwings I could see happening but not Starfox.. But hey, you never know with Nintendo.

How was 2009 the 'worst year'? For Nintendo internal, they released plenty, and they're capping off the year with New Super Mario Bros Wii and Zelda: Spirit Tracks. And on the whole, this is the first year that the Wii has actually seen strong third party support, with some of the best games of the year coming from third parties (Muramasa, Little King's Story, etc). Its total opinion what the 'worst' year of the Wii is. I'd say it was its second year, after Nintendo threw out all its big name titles from launch and had a big gap in between while waiting to release Smash Bros/Mario Kart/Wii Fit. And had close to NO third party support. Its pretty sad when everyone is saying the best games on the system are games like Zack and Wiki or No More Heroes. |
Why do you include 3rd party games? We are talking about 1st party support, and this year has been the weakest I've ever seen from Nintendo themselves for any of their home consoles. Even more when you realize that this was supposed to be Wii's peak year (historically speaking, 3rd year is always the peak year) and thus receiving very strong support.
But nope, it didn't happen. We only got 5 new games and a plethora of GC ports. I can't see how is this better than last year when we got 8 new games (which is not a lot) or 2007 when we got 12 games.

...I talked about their first party support as well. And as I stated, is up to opinion to what is 'weakest' and I felt their second year on the Wii was weaker than this year. Which by the way, isn't over yet. And still has yet to release the bombshell that is known as New Super Mario Bros Wii. And you aren't factoring their DS games as well, as this thread is also about all the types of projects Nintendo is working on (including DS titles). Which Nintendo Internal released a lot this year (and still has more to go like Zelda: Spirit Tracks).
Nintendo didn't release a lot this year. Here's 2009:
Excitebots by Monster Games, Punch-Out by Next Level, Sin & Punishment 2 by Treasure (Japan only), Endless Ocean 2 by Arika (Japan only), NHK Battle Quiz by NHK Enterprise (Japan only), Another Code R by Cing (Japan only), Takt of Magic by Taito (Japan only), Tingle's Balloon Trip by Vanpool (Japan only)... all third party developed.
They have released Wii Fit+ (Which is not really a new game, barely an expansion) from EAD5.
Wii Sports Resort by EAD 2.
NSMBWii by EAD 4.
PokePark: Pikachu's big adventure by Gamefreak. (Japan only)
Zelda ST by EAD 3.
Pokemon HS/GS by Gamefreak. (Japan only)
M&L Bowsers Inside Story by Alpha Dream.
Tomodachi Collection. (Japan only)
Chibi Robo DS by Skip. (Japan only)
WarioWare DIY by Intelligent Systems. (Japan only)
Only 4 games for the Wii made by internal teams, 6 for the DS. This has been the problem this gen with Nintendo. Disproportionate quantities of games for the DS compared to the Wii. Wii is on its prime and is getting less games than the GC did on its last year, while DS is on its last breaths and still gets more support than the Wii. Pretty much confirms what I have been saying.
Plus less than half of the games make it to the USA, so it adds more to my point.

First of all, the DS is hardly on its 'last breaths'. They just announced a fourth version of the DS today. Second of all, a number of the games you are citing as 'Japan Only' such as Sin and Punishment 2 and Endless Ocean 2 are in transition to the international market and not staying in Japan only.
Aren't we talking about 2009? Come on, make up your mind already.
Plus the DS is on its last breath. GBA Micro was launched after the DS had launched. It was the third redesign and by then the GBA was getting almost no more games.
What does the DS have going for it next year in terms of new releases? Let me guess... Oh I know, Golden Sun 3 and Livly Garden Yeah, the DS is not dying /sarcasm

I think you forgot The Legendary Stafy, Fossil Fighters, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, Fire Emblem, and Pokemon Platinum.
Pixel Art can be fun.
We are talking about Nintendo games. It's always indicative of how long into their lifespan the console is to look at the amount of games that Nintendo is releasing for the platform.
E3 was totally about the Wii this year, DS is getting the late redesigns and almost no more 1st party support, a sign that there is a new console approaching. 2010 doesn't look too far-fetched for a new handheld.
