Forums - PC - My computer apparently blows at upgrading ram.

I can't figure this out...

I've got a Emachine T5234 that i had to get quick when my old computer bombed out on me... anyway...

Apparently it can only upgrade to 2 Gigs of ram... since it only has two ram slots.  Which is the minimium for L4D. (have vista)

However i can't seem to figure out how to get it to 2.

It's using 2 512 Dual channel DDR2 ram... and from what i've read one of those is supposed to be non-removable.

The largest i've seen DDR2 ram is at 1 gig.  So what am i missing?

Edit: Wait now i found a 2 gig one.  So how is 2 gig the maximium if there can be a 512 and a 2048?

Maybe you misunderstood what the thing meant? I can't say for certain that it isn't like your meaning, but I haven't seen any systems where there is RAM in a RAM slot, but you can't take it out. I think it means with two 1GB sticks. Not completely sure what it'd do if you put more than 2GB total either. Could do nothing or maybe it'll just limit it down to 2GB.

Yeah.  Looks like you were right and the thing was just written wrong.  The Ram can definitly come out looking at it.  Either way, last time i listen to anybody before i research a computer.

Wanted something that was a good shell that could be upgraded further.

How a motherboard that can only go up to 2GB ram qualfied as that i'll never know.

Own damn fault for not reasearching though.  Which to be fair in my defense is hard without a computer in the first place.

Gotta figure if I wanna spend the money on the ram...

or just say screw it, get another motherboard and put in more ram as i go.

build a PC? lol emachines are garbage.

Yeah, eMachines are some of the lousiest PCs you can find. They almost never have problems with running alone, but upgrading is practically impossible.

Although there's no reason you shouldn't be able to just remove the RAM it currently has and put new in there.

You NEVER combine different types of RAM in correlating slots, unless they just happen to be the same speed.

Yeah i know.  Needed a computer like real fast though... and it was either that or like... i forget what the other piece of crap was.  Eh well.

Don't really have the budget to build a whole new computer if i want to buy a PS3 too.  Recession and all.

Well don't have the know how either.

Oh yeah, that's what was confusing me.  Some site just gave me some bad advice on that.  I figure i'll just bite the bullet and buy a couple 1GBs.  Then next year sometime convince someone to build me a computer.  Or just learn how to do it myself if i'm not to lazy.

Pain in the ass though when people don't know what they're talking about but pretend they do.

I'd just go buy two 2GB DDR2 (at appropriate speed) sticks, unless you're planning on going 64bit Vista 32bit can't handle anymore. Also RAM will solve a lot of computer speed issues, which you're probably having even with XP.

The problem with buying a new motherboard is you'll want a new chip set, maybe a new power supply, faster RAM and with these custom cases you get from emachines, Dell, HP modifications can be rather limited.

I'd search through newegg.com or Tigerdirect.com for any deals on RAM and if/when you get ready to build a computer start scouring slickdeals for advice and parts deals, normally they know what they're talking about and most of the better deals get posted there.

Hey! At least you can update it. There are some motherboards (PC Chips) that come with the processor and RAM soldered into them.

If you need any help when you want to build your computer, be sure to ask ^_^

And those are either (a) super, super cheap (and probably made and marketed in China), or (b) really, really old.

Either way, you're a fool to have that sort in this day and age.
