Forums - Sales - The 360 price cuts could potentialy help the PS3 and here's why....

Until the basic core package includes hard drive, wireless, free live it does not compare to ps3.

You can keep telling yourself that all you want, but the ps2 didn't include a hard drive, or an internet adapter and it still ran circles around the xbox...which was also more expensive than the ps2. deja vu?

The OP does have a point, it's basic marketing theory.

People will look at the shelves and go "Oh, £130 for an X-box 360", then they may think "hang on, why is it so cheap?" especially if they compare it to the PS2 which is at the same price (more or less) and they may think both products are compariable due to the price similarity.

The thought pattern may go "Bargin!" and they rush off to the tills or they may think "something's wrong here, I'm not going to buy it".

If the above holds true, expect a spike in sales as the impulse buyers rush to the tills not believing what they see with the low price, followed by a significant slow down as people begin to get suspicious as to why the machine is so much cheaper than the PS3.

The Wii is in another league as it captured the public imagination and started off a low price.

Except that the price has been slowly falling over 3 years... if they see the $200 (130 pounds?) arcade 360 and think "somethings wrong" they should be smart enough to see the $300 pro 60GB 360 sitting right next to it, and buy that.

...And until the basic PS3 package is the same price as an Arcade or 60GB model, then it doesn't compare to the X360.

See what I just did?

Yeah.....nothing.

It's not price. It's perceived value, which is why the PS3 has outsold the cheaper 360 for almost the entire year.

The 360 may have seen a boost in Europe this week, but judging from what's happened with Japan and N. America, it's not going to last.

Different generation.  The PS2 may have ran circles around the XBOX, but the XBOX was able to prove that having a hard drive was a great idea.  Now this generation, the X360 comes out first, has more games, seeming better games but is NOT running circles around the PS3.  I attribute that to 3 things.

1. The price point is basicaly no different between the X360 and the PS3.  If you equalize features the X360 is no better, if not worse off in price.

2. RROD. It is a fact.  It took too long to fix.  With Jasper they may be able to fix the broken image of the X360 and it may gain traction over the PS3.

3. Subscription to live.  It sucks. It can increase the cost of owning a X360 by many times over the life of the console for a feature which should be a basic part of the package.

Compared an inferior model (Arcade/60GB model without live) to a superior model (PS3 80GB).

lol. Maybe you don't know the general consumer well. Lower price = more likely a buy. If that wasn't the case then we'd see sales lower with price cuts, not higher, no?

Yeah, that's why the N64 and Gamecube annihilated their competition.

@ Soriku , Keep in mind selling loads of consoles doesn't mean sh!t unless it actualy makes you a profit . Sony could probably have 90% marketshare by december if they wanted too but it's likely they'd be selling of the last of their assets by march.

@Mendicate ....Um ?

@stickball , I don't understand you "model history" point elaborate please.

I don't remember the last time I've heard so much hub bub about a price cut.

The 360 has been begging for a price cut for, oh, 3 years now. And now that it's got them, doom and gloom?

Nice.

The 360 price cuts could potentialy help the 360 and here's why....

Most games are multiplat so might as well get a 360. That & they have more exclusives.
