Forums - Gaming - Murderer's mother blames videogames for son's actions

well the mother is just looking for a rational expanation, she didn´t find one that didn´t involve her beeing at least part of the problem so she pointed at the next best thing, remember the days when we had TV to take all the bullets for us, videogames looked nothing like reality so they couldn´t possibly have anything to do with reality, now TV can show rape, murder and genoside (and thats just the news...sad sad world) but Videogames are just as bad as terrorist training camps (ok one notch below that)

Parents need to take responsibility, not just for their action but for their inaction as well, yes some kids are just hard to deal with (I hope I´m not starting a nature vs. nurture debate.....or am I ???) but you need to know what you expose your children to and if you give your childern a good set of moral values they will be able to handle much more sick reality(violence is reality and we all have to live with it) without beeing infected by it.

What it comes down to simply knowing your child.  Know their hobbies, and more than that know their attitudes, personalities, and if you have trouble dealing with them: GET HELP.  Don't just wait for something to happen then blame it on someone else.

Around the Network

^^damn straight, people can´t just live toghether but avoid real contact, sure you can´t control every aspect of a childs life, but you need to know who your child is, without communication there can be no solution, if you say the child isolared its self and played videogames what is the bigger problem the isolation or the videogamed ??? Communication breakdown (yeah I love the Zeppelin) is a cancer in every society that needs to be fought wherever it is found. This is expecially hard with teens because they whant special privacy and individuality, plus they hate to justify their actions.

another problematic issue is the "get help" part, a whole lot of people confuse getting help with beeing weak and admitting mistakes, knowing ones own weaknesses and accepting help should be seen as true strength not weakness.

New of the World... wow, looks like a very professional news site hehehe :)

And I think that with a game with the title "MANHUNT", you should expect to HUNT MEN

yeah, no sh!t, huh?

What ever happen to them blaming bowling on what happened at Columbine? That's what those nutjobs were doing before going to class, truly, no bullshit!

And yes, the mother should be just as accountable as the son. How do your laws work with this kind of issue on the other side of the big pond? If they were under 18, or maybe 17, then the parents do share some of the responsibility here, though still not enough, it's generally a civil issue with law suits.

Damn Stof, I missed it, LOL

BTW, guys where do I find the ritual blood letting game, it sounds like it's right up my alley ;)

I agree with those deriding the News of the World, however it is our best selling sunday newspaper so I wouldn't dismiss its opinions out of hand, a lot of people will agree with those comments and the opposing view will not be genuinely expressed in the newspaper.

Just as with the R:FoM church row. The church was interviewed on BBC News (another biased, populist 'news' organisation, which is disgracefully publicly funded through compulsory taxation, but don't get me started there), as were several mothers of murderers and their victims who all blamed violence in games, and so were groups against violence in video games. On the other hand no-one was interviewed supporting the opposing view (that games don't cause violence, that there are age ratings on games, and that people should be personally responsible for their actions etc.), and the statement issued by SONY was cut down to 1 line, which was effectively a mis-quote attempting to distort SONY's statement.

It was left to SKY News, a privately funded news organisation (by FOX iirc), who are under no obligation to report in the public interest, to actually read out the SONY statement in full and interview people which actually disagreed with the church.

I would say the BBC is a better source thn news of the world (!) and tbh, the Sony/church scandal didn't have much to do with the media (it was a legal case), whereas this is the media trying to get people stirred up against video games.

And for goodness sakes woman! It's not as if it has a mysterious "M" on the box, it's got a frickin "18" in a circle. Also, it's EXACTLY the same symbol as you find on films! So what? You thought films didn't have rating either?

I'm sorry to say, I now understand why my mum's home county get made fun of in the media...

The Sony vs. Church is BS, too.
Sony was being nice and apologized, but that's when they the first wrong move.

The Church can then bully Sony for being "wrong".

And then you've got the religious fanatic politicians backing the Church.
