Your example doesn't hold.  Larger CRT TVs are ok because they are CRT and blend well, but large LCD/Plasma TVs that display below 720i/p are horrible to look at.

Look  at a 20" 720p vs 1080p monitor...can't tell the diff...

 

now look on a larger screen...oh oh...you start to see the diff

Now get you blind head out of your ass and see this for what it is...regressive...ohhh, bigger screen...crappier graphics..thanks NIN.

You can't really unless you are a real videophile... not till the 50s... because you sure the heck can't see the diffrence on a 42 inch screen... especially since the ration on 720p screens are usually much higher in the low to mid range models.

As for Wii PES vs HD PES, ratings or intuitive controls don't decide, What decides is how real the experience the consoles deliver. Neither one is gonna deliver a physical experiece of true football, so they might as well make it a graphical one. Here the HD versions win.
