Forums - Sony - So my PS3 did a new trick today (help topic)

So my PS3 did a new trick today, it showed that my DS3 is not the only one that likes rumble. So today, I turned on my PS3 and to my surprise, my PS3 started to "vibrate." When I touch it, it feels the same as it normally does (like machinery going on) but a little more powerful. I can even hear it vibrating, although it only lasts for like 10 seconds. I'm pretty sure it's the fan since I can kind of hear it, especially since I have the LOUDEST PS3 FAN ever, IDK if my house is too hot (it usually is very hot, get complaints from friends all the time) or that my PS3's fan is on it's last legs and about to crap out on me. When I'm playing for a certain amount of time (maybe like 1 hour or 2) and my house is hot, my PS3 sounds like a jet plane is about to take off.

WOW...OK, Im downloading something from the store right now and it's on XMB, and as I speak, the fan just got louder, and it's not even hot in my house right now. It's on the floor and there is nothing near it, its on horizontal so the vents are not closed off. All my friends that have a PS3 say that their PS3 practically makes No noise, and I keep my PS3 much more ventilated than theirs.....Is this me being paranoid or is this really the signs of a failing fan? I REALLY don't want to call Sony for 2 reasons, This is a 60gb launch PS3 and since it is launch, Sony's warranty ran out (and soon so will my Toys R Us warranty).

Forgot to mention, my PS3 spews out a ridiculous amount of heat, which leads to my house getting hot. I've noticed that with my PS3 off, it feels like a 5 degrees (F) cooler. I know that that's normal, but I don't think that it supposed to give off THAT much heat, it gets louder to cool it from all the heat that IT gives out!

Time to use that warranty ;)

My 60GB and 40GB PS3s do put out enough heat to keep the rooms they are in relatively warm though I do like to keep my French-Canadian home (we call them igloos) cooler than most people. So pumping out heat is normal. They are quiet though since the ambient temperatures mean they only kick into high gear on the hottest day or two of the year when I have the windows open.

Why isn't your ambient temperature kept cooler? Are you heating or just live in a hot (higher than 30C or 86F) area?

Maybe you should inquire with Toys R Us to see what their policy covers and if it is not covered you can either break it open (maybe a good internal dusting or lubricating of the fan might help) or pay the 150$ for servicing.

Good luck with your troubles.

The only time I've ever heard a PS3 get loud was at my brother-in-laws house. And that's when he didn't have his AC on and his PS3 was set in an entertainment center with the doors closed.

When it got loud, which it did get pretty loud, I opened the doors on the entertainment center. Ten minutes later, it was running silent.

PS3 heat+noise=you people sound crazy to me

Just from personal experience though with the 3 PS3's I deal with. My PS3 doesn't let off anywhere near as much heat as my XBOX 360.

maybe you should call sony, but, they will probably just say its normal.

use the toys r us one quick you can actually have some money spend on new games, just take out ur old hard drive and ur set. also 60 gigs are just like that but if yours is abnormally load it could lead to an overheat, the bluray laser breaking and having no more discs, or just a hot room. so go to toys r us pronto

My prediction: NATAL WILL NOT help 360 sales. Maybe a 50-100k boost week 1, then a 30-70 k boost week 2, and back to the norm again after 3-5 weeks.

Put some WD40 on the fans and some ICE on the Blu-ray drive before playing, will help a lot.

Sounds like fan is working overly hard because of the ambient temp of your house.  Has it always been this loud ?? could be faulty bearings in the fan, or you just havent cleaned the thing since you got it, and leaving it on the floor is probably not helping either, it will suck up alot of dust down there.

Try unplugging it completely and vacuuming all the exhaust ports.  Try and do a thorough job as it is probably pretty dusty.  My laptop used to overheat (ran at about 60 C) I vacuumed the heat-syncs and it now runs at about 40 C.  Big improvement.  Good luck!

I live in the bahamas and it's pretty hot all year round here. The room that I have my ps3 in is pretty small, has 1 window, and one door. I usually have the window closed. My ps3 pushes out quite a bit of heat when the window is closed, and it does make noise but not much. But I've had people walk in the room and noticed that just walking through the open door feels like the temp has raised by 8 degrees or so. My room's bigger, when my ps3 was in there it used to be quiter and didn't push out as much heat, I would always have a fan on, my door would be closed, and the windows would be opened. Mine is a 80GB BTW...

However my bro's 60GB runs load after being on for under 20 mins. And pushes out heat like crazy, even if he's in his living room, 2 windows open, and nothing blocking the way from the kitchen, just a huge walkway. I just assumed all launch 60's were loud, but on the internet I see that they aren't much different from the 80's in the motorstorm bundle [the one that I have], unless you cound the EE chip.
