QFT, the US has been in head-up-ass mode for at least the last eight years, probably the last thirty. Our hostility to foreign culture and foreign ideas is so deep-seated that it scares me sometimes...

At least we do still have talented artists, although they may be bogged down in the same problems as the rest of us.

Wha???

I would say Europe is many times worse in that regard.  They don't care about anything outside the europeon union.

You think America is bad... look at countries like France... where in recent years they've had laws outright banning aspects other cultures because of their fear of immigration. (When they had the headscarf law... if they've ever even gotten rid of that.)

America is much more accepting of multiculturalism... heck it's basically the US' defining feature.

Aside from which... really looking at it politically when it's about literature?

Wut? The France population is scared of Immigratiion that is why they choose a immigrant as President?

The headscarf law was if I am right only for the seperation of State and church and schools.  In a lot of Islam countries like Turkey you can't wear a headscarf on school aswell...Why is it so wrong then if France do it?  And other EU countries aswell?

Because it's actually part of their religion?  That's like telling a Jewish person he has to eat non kosher foods.

Seperation of church and state doesn't mean persecuting peoples religious beliefs.

You and I both know that the kind of immigrants they are afraid of are just that... muslims.

Comparing single Europeon countries and America as a whole is a ridiclious premise just due to the size difference... you can drive from one country to another in a short period of time.   Europeon literature as a whole is pretty insular as well.... because writers write what they know.

The real reason most nobel prize winners are Europeon is because the judges are all sweedish.

Again, if muslims are not allowed to wear one in Islam countries like Turkey why do they demand it then from a not Islam country like France.  Christians are not allowed to wear Christian symbols, Jews are not allowed to wear their things...But if they want it their are always Catholic, Jews, Islam schools

It started with demanding to wear a headscarf...Now they want that muslim holy days also count on schools and that their is no school on that day, that they only serve Halal food.  Sorry but France and other EU countries schould not adapt their rules/laws on what the muslim immigrants want, if they can't stand how the rules are their are always muslim schools for them.

And Swedisch are now biased aswell great...

Wait, you don't have a problem with that? A government institution forcing people to leave important articles of their faith at home is a good thing? The government has gone from forcing Catholicism to forcing a form of atheism... Some may argue that's a step in the right direction but I won't. Neither idea is worth a damn.

Hey, I despise organized religion like nobody's business... Absolutely hate it. But even I have to acknowledge that there's something fundamentally wrong with a government that forces people to leave their religious beliefs at home, even when some of those beliefs (headscarves, for example) are so important to people of that faith. It's a slap in the face of God to go outside without one. Personally, I think the idea that God cares if you wear a certain headdress or not is bullshit but we should all respect that person's beliefs and let them wear a fuckin' scarf if they think it gets them in good with God.

Am I the only one who sees the problem with this kind of thinking?

Then again, maybe I should shut up because it's obvious that Muslims are happy with how the French government is treating them... After all, it's been a few years since they rioted en masse.

I thought that was like... last year that happened or early this year?  Either way that's partly to do with stuff with that... and just the fact that EU employment laws are very anti-immigrant making it real hard for immigrants to get good jobs.

But yeah, i have a problem with it to... hence why i mention it... people should be able to wear whatever they want to wear more or less.  Banning signs of faith is just horrible.

I think what you are talking about is from 2004 or 2005.  This year/ last year there were riots but not for the problem with the headscarf. I think you are talking about the carfire riots.

Nah, now you are overreacting it.  It is only at school, if they really want to wear it they can go to a Muslim school their are plenty of them.  If you want that your son is a Christian and would go to the church with school every week then you would send him to a Christian school don't ya?

You are comparing a church(where you can go anytime) to an article of clothing that some branches of muslims as something that must be worn outside at all times or it's a sin?

Not remotely similar.

Not exactly.  If a moslim wants that her daughter wears a headscarf because of her religion why do they don't send them then to a Moslim school;  Those schools are made specially for the Moslim community, they only serve hallal food, on special Moslim days they have a free day etcetera...  Headscarfs is one thing but it always go farther.  If you make a trip with school and you are going to a restaurent then they should go to a Hallal restaurant because the Moslim students wants.....It creates problem especially in some parts of France where evere class excists of students with more than 5 different religions...

That's basically the definition of the Jim Crow laws.  "Seperate but equal".

Problem being, seperate is never equal.

Can anyone name the last 3 people who won the Nobel Prize in this area without doing a Google search for their names?

There is a shortage in America but it isn't of good writers, it's of people who actually care about the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Euhm what..how?  Bouna and Zied two North African teenagers were chased by the police because of some Criminal activities;   To hide from the police they jumped in a Electric cabine were they got electrocuted to death.    And that started the riots against the police.

The Paris Banlieue's are full with gangs who said it was the police his fault.  And that was the reason why the riots started.

I don't think those were the last three.

I just finished reading "Seize the Day!" on Monday though.  Pretty good book... though I must admit I was hoping for more of a conclusion.

The riots started because of the area itself being filled with a bunch of poor angry people who are mostly poor because of racist employment laws.

The old race riots the US had were often caused for the same reasons.  Built up racial tension at being held down by institutionalized discmination rises to the surface when an authority figure is involved in the death of a person of said held down minority. (Often teenageers as older people can be marked more.)

The riots went through other parts of Europe aswell that can't be for the problems in France...Belgium and even The Netherlands had riots.  And if you asked to them why they did it they just answered that it is cool to do that or that those guys belong to their 'gang'.
