The riots started because of the area itself being filled with a bunch of poor angry people who are mostly poor because of racist employment laws. The old race riots the US had were often caused for the same reasons. Built up racial tension at being held down by institutionalized discmination rises to the surface when an authority figure is involved in the death of a person of said held down minority. (Often teenageers as older people can be marked more.)

The riots went through other parts of Europe aswell that can't be for the problems in France...Belgium and even The Netherlands had riots. And if you asked to them why they did it they just answered that it is cool to do that or that those guys belong to their 'gang'.
