Forums - Nintendo - The Wii's current lack of mature content games: temporary or terminal?

@Onyxmeth: I agree with the last centence.
Which leads us back to reasoning, where he doesn't explain why the M-rated games interest him. He does clarify, that he's not arguing does rating equal quality, but, deliberately or not, he's still getting there. Maybe it's just a little bad wording, but it's the picture you can read between the lines. And of course he's entitled to like games by whatever metric he chooses, but i'd still be looking at reasons why he prefers M-rated games, where i'd suggest, that in the type of games he likes, the most quality titles are pushed towards the high age rating.

Making a metric for something mature isn't really easy. But if we look at how mature brain works, the game can't be too "flashy", it can't be a "reflex test", it can't be too fast, it has to be somewhat easy to learn and to play in bursts. It also should be somewhat sophisticated.

If you really read through the first page, you'll notice the OP confirms what he meant so there are no misinterpretations. He likes violent games. He explains that if the same exact game were made less grissly and less bloody, it would interest him less. He explains that he only used the word mature in regards to the M rating, and it didn't necessarily mean the real word mature. He also explains he doesn't want to go into semantics over it, which is precisely what was happening and what you and others continued after his response. He seems to be fully aware of what everyone is explaining to him. He just doesn't care because unlike you and the others responding about what "mature" means, he was never reading that much into it. He just wanted to know why there aren't more M rated games on the Wii.

Making a metric for a mature game would be impossible. You would first need to figure out what makes a mature person, which is a feat and a half in itself, and then you would need to find every common factor and apply each one to games. On top of that, you would have to find reasons why the hundreds of games those same people enjoy, that are considered not mature, are played by them and why they are not qualified. At the same time, you would need to figure out why these same mature games are enjoyed by immature people, and if that in turn disqualifies them as mature games. This brain racking is exactly why it's so pointless to go down this road.

Your owns examples of gaming traits that are mature have no real bearing on mature people, because you can't fit mature people into one set of likes and dislikes.

I don't know why mature rated games are even considered mature rated when the majority that play it happen to be kids ranging from 13 and under... (Gta, Metal Gear i highly doubt a kid could even learn how to play it). But still I will never understand the rating system. I have a few Mature rated games (Quake 2, Diablo Examples). As you can see i love my old titles... But i also get games like Mario (Mario Kart Wii, Smash, etc). Mature content? What, nudity? The stuff that kids always want to look at with their young perverted minds?

If we go by this logic then nothing is mature in life. Which is the truth actually.

Why do so many people need to argue over what's mature or not in this topic? The OP obviously asked for M rated games and asked why there weren't many M rated games on the Wii. If he said mature, it was obviously in reference to the rating supplied by the ESRB.

Exactly... So I'm going to give an example... What if Mario was rated M? Would these Mature lovers like it because of it's rating? Why ask for M rated products without a good reason? I'm not the one to choose what a person would like but give me a break. I believe the majority of great games aren't even in the mature category... There are few that I like that are even in that category, the rest i call it kids stuff because in reality that is all kids want... Cool stuff... So do elder people though, except they want cool cars and whatever (Yeah generalizing is fun). My point is why do people still believe the ESRB rating system? I could give less crap about the rating system.

Yes, if Mario was M-rated, it would be more violent, bloody, etc. and in turn the OP would enjoy it more. If you actually read through the topic, you would know he gave that exact example. He has every right to feel that way also. He doesn't need a reason just to appease you.

Also you basically missed my entire point. Nobody in this topic believes the ESRB when they label a Mature game as mature. Everyone here understands that is a stand-in word to respresent a game not appropriate for people under the age of 17. If you aren't familiar, this is how rating systems work. I'm sure they would have loved to go with the word "Restricted" but unfortunately I would put good money on the MPAA having trademarked that only for their use long ago.

If you don't give a crap about the ratings system then why even bother getting in this discussion? Obviously it's causing you boredom, so it would be better for you to find a more enjoyable discussion before this one puts you to sleep.

I usually read entire posts (I've been reading through discussions throughout this board since around maybe late 2006), and I enjoyed reading fan boy posts and more stuff about gaming... But the ESRB crap really gets on my nerves. I just felt like posting my thoughts on the ESRB garbage. It's funny how a large portion of GTA is played by 13 year olds and below! I find it quite shocking really. If these ratings would actually work i would respect them more.

It is fun arguing about subjects... And didn't I say that I'm not the one to choose what a person likes? Actually I don't really care what other people like. I like what I like; I don't care about ratings, nor do I look at reviews. Hell even when i was 12 years old I liked "mature" rated games, but as I aged I started disliking them because of what they depict as "mature content". The discussion is not making me feel bored, you are not the one to decide on whether I can go into a discussion or not. It is my free will.

Good God

Okay here is the premise:

I am what the industry would most likely dub the brainless masses.

I enjoy loud 'hectic' explosions, improbable action sequence, highlanders wannabe hacking the shit out of each other and would probably fall asleep while watching Schindler's List because I thinks its as boring as crap.

I eat up the mediocre action movies that hollywood churns out at a rate faster than Beers being consumed at oktoberfest and despite recongnising their flaws will enjoy them thoroughly anyways because that my taste (or lack of by some of your standards).

I enjoy the shallow visceral appeal many games categeories by the ESRB as M tend to display.

Why is a game generally categeorised as M? because it contains violence, sex, horror etc. In short the sort the shit than many of you claim to belong to the exclusive domain of a sexually repressed teen.

Call my taste shallow, call my taste imature, but according to the ESRB the games that interest me the most (due to their themes) generally have the big fat M for Mature warning sticker on it.

Games have context and when taken out of context even with the same gameplay they would have less appeal to any given audience.

How dramatic would Devil May Cry 4 be if the main character was a Kirby lookalike and all his enemy are yellow rodent that yelled 'pika' as they attack you?

How much would the single player expirience of COD suffer if the game was based on paintball skirmish instead of its captivating storyline?

Gameplay may be a significant factor to any title but atmosphere, visualisation and themes can still play a deciding role on how much one likes a game.

So here it is:

Fact: The Wii currently lack games with the rating of M or above compare to the PS360.

This implies that those theme and elements that appeal to me on a visceral level aren't present in force, hence less game that could concievably interest me.

Armed with this, I came here with those few facts, some rambling theories and a few questions I hope poeple who own the system and know more about it than me will answer.

Some have been helpfully pointing out that yes, cool games with blood, gore and 'hectic explosions' are coming out or are already out, look at CoD/Conduit/RedSteel2 as an example etc. They acknowledge that their might always be a disparity but at least it isn't as bad as I initially thought.

There are exceptions to everything, both in my preference and in the game the system offers. I have already pre-ordered Little Big Planet because the game appeals to me despite its nature, and I love playing SSBB with my mates because its just so damn fun.

I will also certainly be stealing my mate's Wii for the launch week of Monster Hunter 3 (I believe it is rate T actually, which means my initial post was in error), and as I've posted earlier will most likely be purchasing Metroid and No More Heroes (which are rated T and M respectively) this x-mas

Still though, I can't help but lament at the lost oppurtunity:

How cool would DMC4 be if you had a wii-mote to do your hack & slash? How much more intense would Dead Space be when you're holding you quasi gun in your trembling hand as you slowly advance rather than using a D-Pad? Why are these games, marketed by publishers who have tauted console neutrality, not coming to the best selling system of the generation? Is it graphical limitation? Is it a belief in the lack of market? If it is the later how can this be proven when no blockbuster of its nature are ever Wii inclusive?

/end rant

To sum it all up... It really depends on taste now does it? Cuz I know that the entertainment that I like and prefer is the complete opposite of yours :P But that does not mean that what you like is inferior to what I like. It is mere preference in the end.

YES YES YES, and now the thread has been completley derailed. At least I got some answer before it went south.

Thanks to everyone who has provided some answer for my questions and to those derailers and debaters that force me to write that essay length garbage just to justify myself because YES I AM THAT PETTY... :)

Peace.

The Wii does not lack mature content games... :)

i noticed this a while ago.

AAA mature titles like RE5, FF13 FF13v, GTA4, MGS4 are STILL HD.

and those are the games i care for, this christmas and next year look alot better to have ps360.
than a wii.

FF12 had an ERSB rating of Teen.

I think every Final Fantasy has.

Versus have blood in the cloud trailer, and ff13 have more damage and weapons that previous FF.

So?  You can have some blood in a game and still avoid the mature rating.

I still dont get it why need blood and graphic violence in a videogame. Dont everyone knew that these kind of games are mostly played by teens between 13 over than adults and young adults?

And as for the topic, so Madworld wasnt mature to you? A game that could be ban on Europe because of excessive violence?

end of core gaming days prediction:

E3 2006-The beginning of the end. Wii introduced

E3 2008- Armageddon. Wii motion plus introduced. Wii Music. Reggie says Animal crossing was a core game. Massive disappointment. many Wii core gamers selling their Wii.

E3 2010- Tape runs out

Exactly my thoughts. But it's all preference in the end. I don't mind people that like such video games, but saying that they are mostly played by the elder is just wrong these days, like i said i used to play such games when i was in my young teenage years.
