bdbdbd said: @Onyxmeth: Yeah, it's a bit messy and partially it's because of i need to explain it in english (not my native language), when i don't necessarily find the correct words to easilly describe what i'm meaning. I actually started typing the post last night, but had to quit and finished it this morning, after a whopping 4-5 hours of sleep.
Space Invaders qualifies for it being easy to play, slow at the start, simple graphicswise. And Crazy Taxi, despite being easy to to pick up and play, it's not simple graphicswise (a lot of different objects that has to be noticed) and it starts with "full speed", which makes it require reflexes.
I don't personally pass a judgement about (current) myself, since it's not objective in any ways. When i was 15, i was so mature and grown-up (read: thought i was), but today, when i look myself back then, i must say that i wasn't as grown-up that i thought i was. Maybe after 15 years i don't think i was so grown-up around 30, that i think i am now, or maybe i will, that i don't know today. The 30 years old isn't some date that you suddenly feel like you're grown-up now. It's just an rounded age that older people perceive people (like themselves) having grewn being adults. And, it's a common perception, that people at their thirties have became adults.
You had a point with kids and growing older all the time while learning, which i agree here, but again, i was pointing out the common perception considering the relation between peoples age and maturity.
There are two points, into which i take my stand, the other is the common perception and the other is brain developement, since those two are basically the only metrics that can be objectively used. Brains physical developement (and related change in behaviour) is scientific fact and majority is what decides what kind of behaviour can be taken as mature behaviour (ie. makes the "rules"). |
Hi Bdbdbd I'd like to reinterate my earlier post here because your example REALLY bugged me, this is not a personal attack but I think your reasonining and conclusion is out of synch. Please feel free to correct me:
For its days, Space Invader was consider a graphical treat, it certainly requires twitch reflect and is one of the granddaddy of all 'dodge and shoot, shoot and dodge' game (in fact that is the entire gameplay!). The amount of time you spend on space invader depends invariably on how good your reflex is.
How does a game of Space Invaders end? By either finishing the entire game (is that possible?) or you dying. Thats either one damn long sitting or you dying and going away.
How is that different from the campaign mode of any First Person Shooter? You play and either die and give up you get to the next checkpoint / save. If anything the artificial checkpoint most game create nowadays ensure shorter gaming duration because they create artificial breaks.
The only point you have is simplicity, the nature of a game being 'pick up and play' which you consider mature. But again this is a matter of perspective.
FPS, one of the genre you lambasted about is notorious for its 'pick up and play' appeal, it is this very nature that made FPS such a huge success to begin with.
In contrast, you have the games like Civlization which is complex, hard to pickup, 'dull', graphically bland and certainly not a popular mainstream game that all the 'hormonal teenager' are going gaga over. It appeals to a niche audience that like sophisticated micro-management in their games and those audience would certainly be offended if you ever went around telling them CIV is not really a mature game becomes its too complicated and does not have 'pick-up-and-play appeal'.
Space Invader is a very poor example to use to try and pick apart what constitute a mature game because it is one of the key precurser of the immature games that you dislike.
Retro <> mature.
In Short how does Space Invader qualify itself as a mature game when it fails to pass all but one of your flag?
The ironic thing here is that I agree with you, I believe Space Invader is a timeless classic that I could never get sick of but my reason for this is the complete opposite of what you propose and it mystify me because your justification runs counter to the game in everyway I perceive it.
To Yushire: As stated in my earlier post I have a PS3, I live with 2 flatmates and we also hve a Wii, 3 gaming PC, a PS2, a Dreamcast <3, a N64 and more handheld than we can count, at the end of this year I also plan to get an 360. I'm a cosmopolitan.
