Closer to $150, I would suggest a good 8800. But if you're willing to spend closer to $200, definitely get one of the Radeon 4800 series...4870s are really, really nice.

You can get a HD4850 for $170 and a HD4670 that matches the 8800GT/9800GT for $80. Yes, $80.

I wouldn't go that far... 128bit bus, 400 stream processors etc. If the 4850 is ~50% more powerful than the 8800gt then the 4670 cannot be a match for the 8800gt.

http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3405&p=6 That shows the 4670 as being about as good as a 3850-3870, depending on game. http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3151&p=6 That shows a 3870 as being as good as an 8800GT, which was rebranded as a 9800GT. Therefore, the 4670 often matches the 8800GT/9800GT.

But still a 128bit bus... Anyway I concede you're probably right.

Tease.

Soleron you might just be right. Except I still don't know about that 128bit bus. It seems kinda small.

Tease.

Well Nvidia is releasing the GTX 1xx series soon which will be rebrandings of the 9xxx series as cheaper cards. Basically the weakest card in the rebrand will probably be the 9600GT which will be the GTX120 which I think is the weakest card in the GTX 1xx series.

The HD4670 has 32 GB/s of bandwidth, 6 GPix and 24 GTex fillrate. It consumes 60w.

The 8800GT has 58 GB/s, 9.6 Gpix and 33.6 GTex. It consumes 105w.

Not bad for $80, really! But you should really consider the HD4850. I think it's your best choice right now.

I was thinking of building myself a new desktop by next summer now that far cry 2 is coming out, but I wanna hit the market at just the right time. Anyone know when the next line of GPUs is supposed to be released since when that happens older GPU prices drop a good amount?

I would get the hd 4850 it is 139.99 after MIR. But if you wait, wait till the end of next summer to jump.

Also you get 6.0% back off newegg using Microsoft's  cash-back program.

That's what I will end up doing, but I'm not really known for my patience when it comes to new cocmputers so we will see....
